Im thinking about heading to the sunshine state in a month or 2. I'll be living out of my backpack and was just wondering if there are places along the beach where I can camp out without getting hassled? Is it easy to find jobs down there. Other people doing the same thing? Thanks!
You'll have your own little beachfront property, and dolphins make good neighbors. Sandspur beach,on the southeast corner of Bahia Honda key,has been named Best Beach in America. Mosquitoes can be thick on the islands! Be forewarned. Little Talbot Island and Caladesi Island State Park are good examples of barrier island beaches. Guana River, Cayo Costa, and St.Joseph Peninsula State Parks contain some of the most pristine beaches and dunes.
the job market down here is pretty shitty. you can find the standard food industry jobs pretty easily, but beyond that you're SOL. I'd be weary about camping on the beach, most beaches are patrolled at night and you will be hassled if not kicked off the beach if you're found sleeping on it. Not to mention the bugs that'll get you. that's the info for the treasure coast and daytona beach areas at least.
we might be joining you on the beach if we dont get rent paid. haha. anyways...as rainbowphotographer said...most beaches i have been to get patrolled at night...i'm sure there are spots you can camp...i just dont know of them. There is 1 little spot on new symrna beach... now this is a really bad description...but try to stay with me on the road horizontal to the beach there is a really weird house...windows everywhere, just odd architecture.... directly in front of that is a road (i forget the name)...If you go down that road there are two big rocks, and a little area with woods and 2 wheel barrows (if they have not been moved). I have slept in those wheel barrows time and time again....check it out if you are in the area.
As you travel about the state you will notice that the texture of the beach sand changes quite dramatically from place to place. Beaches on Sanibel Island in the southwestern Florida are made up almost entirely of shell fragments, whereas Panhandle beaches are almost pure quartz sand and squeak like snow when you walk on them.
It would be very easy to live out of a backpack on FL beachs if you fly under the radar. There is work but its crappo service work if you're OK with that. Depending on where you are peoples reaction to you will run the range from intolerant to almost violent. Hard to be a hippy in FL.
