No one has ever PROVEN to me that there ISNT a god either.. so it could go either way. Thats why it's called faith.
Weed doesn't make me think about god. That's pretty lame. I may think about the infinity of this universe and how complex even most basic things like our minds work. God's too simple for the powerful effects of weed.
Yep, it usually starts with me in the backyard with the telescope (red eyed). Pondering the insignificance of man in contrast to the enormity of the universe. The chance of a planet forming with the perfect conditions is exceptionally slim and then life evolving. Shame its so cold out, Jupiter is out now in the mornings under Venus.
This is an great statement because I feel the same way. I definitely can feel seperate forms of myself when I am high. There are different ideas about this in different religions. In Christianity you have the body soul and spirit. In India they believe you have seven spiritual levels. It all seems to be connected. I know that if you smoke pot and combine that with meditation you can have the most indescribable things occur in your mind, but I wonder if its all just physiological (or psychological, but that being a composition of very complicated chemicals and electral synapses and junk, determining our moods and thoughts). In response to the original post, I have also had an experience on some really amazing weed where I felt like suddenly I understood that there was a god. I felt like there was no correct religion, but that god had built it into all of us to have a natural desire to do good to others, and that we would all go to heaven when we die. It was a beautiful experience and I cried and my friend was like wtf? I was high on this weed called grapefruit and it was the best high I ever had because it was pure white and smelled so strong, freshly plucked. I had been deeply troubled about religion before that experience, but it flushed out my emotions and made me feel peace. But then I wonder, what if these are just the psychological affects of marijuana? What if there is no God? What if it isn't logical to assume that before the universe and time itself, there was a god that already existed somehow? I understand that it is complicated to say that the big bang just happened, but I think it makes things orders of magnitude more complicated when someone says that there was a god before that ("The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins). Then again, as the arguement goes, god exists outside of our understanding of logic and science, and therefore we can't understand how he could "always" have existed. Another idea is a question. who has ever witnessed a supernatural event? I argue that nobody ever has, and for that reason it would seem logical to conclude that there is no supernatural, or at least there certainly is no reason to believe in it. So ultimately I do not know if there is a god. However, I think the most crazy conclusion of all of them is that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that if you do not believe in him you are going to burn in hell forever, even if you never even heard of him. This was hard for me to deny having grown up in a combined Christian Church and school (indoctrination big time). But once I reached the age of reason I began to leave all that behind me.
Dj, everything you write about is pretty articulate and expresses my thought processes, pretty much perfectly. Let me tell you about physiology and weed. These thoughts are interesting, and they could be used to explain away what happens to you, but it really doesn't. There is so much to write about this. But have you ever wondered why many people don't question science, and that those that do are instantly scorned for it? Does this sound familiar to you in anyway? To me, it sounds very much like a religion - Thousands of years ago (yes, and even today) - That if you question science, then you are a crazy person, that you have lost your mind and that you should head to your nearest insane asylum. To me, science is just a modern day religion full of its own doctrines, rules, and regulations. Many people embrace science because they believe it gives us answers, and that it'll one say prove everything and tell us what reality really is, but that couldn't be any further from the truth. Look at science, and question it. I always hear about how it is important to be a skeptic, that it is the key ingredient to discover truth, and I believe that this is correct. But where does it say that skepticism ends with science, and that science is somehow above skepticism - It isn't, and if you look really deep about how we come to our conclusions, even if we do have effects that are empirical, it still doesn't do any job of explaining what happens. The explanations make sense, but what are these explanations really, other than some lame attempt to try to explain the connections, and what are the connections other than what we are perceiving? Science is like a huge community. The scientists are a part of this community, and their is a pecking order, and whoever is at the top gets the most say on what reality is and isn't. If you go against their ideas, then you are a lunatic, and you should be ignored. All science does is stumbles across effects. Obviously, if you add A+B you will always get C. But why does this happen, is something entirely up to our perception. We can attempt to explain why certain effects happen if we apply certain attributes, factors together, but that never really explains whats really going on. All this is, is a fancy cookbook, but with nature. At one point all scientists accepted the theory of ether. Then later on, they all thought that idea was nuts, and just forgot about it. At one point, everyone thought that the brain can't grow new cells, that certain areas of the brain is for certain purposes, and that's it. Until one scientist came around, and claimed that there is a plasticity to the brain... obviously, he was a lunatic, and people called him as such. Until he proved them wrong by allowing the blind to see by using their TONGUE! Thinking needn't be so structured. I recommend that you check out "Man's Search for Ultimate Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. I'm pretty sure it'll blow your mind Check out the music video "Sweating Bullets" by megadeth, and I think you'll begin to understand how thinking that weed and the experience occurring along with it, as merely a physiological, psychological effect, is actually a pretty neurotic thought behavior. Leave the ego behind, and quiet the mind.
I think about spirituality all the time when I smoke. I usually discuss it with this kid who's all into Christianity... I usually think about that all the time when I'm on mushrooms or LSD.
There is plenty of proof for god not existing. First there are the multitude of religions that claim different things, either many gods, one god, self-proclaimed gods etc. all these religions can't be right (so how do we know if any of them are right?). Then there is the fact the the universe is billions of years old and man kind has been around for over a 100 000 years, yet the idea of a modern god(s) only came about at the very most 10 000 years ago. Finally if you ever read any of the religious scriptures, you would realize that many of them are very out dated, incorrect, and quite frankly seem quite man made. Religions were a way for people to answer the questions they could not possibly explain at the time and now they are simply outdated. Also to all the people who believe in a higher power, yet not any religions, the idea of god comes from religion and thus you must take a piece of religion when you say there is a god. For example if you believe in one God you are taking an idea from the judo-Christian one god idea. If you believe in renicarnation then you are taking a piece from the eastern religions. Also take into account evolution, which shows there is no need for any creator gods at all. Don't take my word for it, go to your local library and read some books on religion, evolution, god and other topics relating and make an informed dicesion off that. also read some books about aliens, yea aliens, i once read a book about aliens and it was bullcrap but i could not technically disprove a single thing the author wrote, it just goes to show you that because you can't disprove something doesn't make it real. Just try and disprove the flying spaghetti monster and his noodly appendages. Remember think differently and think critically.
never heard the quote? LIFE is too short for one decision, MUSIC is too large for one station, LOVE is too big for one nation, GOD is too big for one religion. Science is man-made. None of those things you said PROVED anything, your taking the assumption and trying to rule a God out through indirect information.
Existence as we know it had to start somewhere. Consciousness had to start somewhere. Reality had to start somewhere. Matter, Life, Thought, Spirituality, being.. it all had to start somewhere. Sure, I can understand looking at the big picture, but look at the biggest picture.
No science is observations based on fact. religion is man made. Pretty simple, and religion and god are directly related. Also all my points make sense. Although i can't physically show you that god doesn't exist, you can't physically show me that ufo or flying spaghetti monster, or jedi or purple unicorns don't exist either. Like i said think out the box. I respect your views on religion but i think they are false.
I never said anything about religion. I agree with you 1000% on that. Sure I can't pull a flying spaghetti monster riding on a ufo with jedi unicorn-wranglers out of my ass, and you know thats just ridiculous. All the thought's, views, stories, and ideas based around religion all lead to ONE thing, and it's the idea of a higher existence other than our own.
And science is HUMAN observations based on HUMAN fact. Which I don't discredit, but theres more to it than that when you stroll down the line enough to the point where science (which you believe holds the most water) can't even explain how everything was created. Why do you believe theres hundreds of theories on how the universe began.. (ex: the big bang).. because there is no proof. Our mind's just cant comprehend the vastness of it all..
Science explains how Religion explains why It boggles my mind how some people think you believe in science it means there can't be no god either.
