I used to love growing flowers in my garden, but lately I've become more partial to growing fruits and veggies. My favourite garden plants are tomato plants, beans, and basil.

I have ONE purple tomatillo plant, but it has the most delicious mostly tiny, but some not so tiny, tomatillos. That is one plant I spend a lot of time crouching next to, peeling and eating tomatillos. Yummm.

I like some flowers, but most of what I grow (on purpose, I've got wildflowers that take care of themselves) is veggies & herbs.

My favorites are tomatoes & mini-pumpkins, basil, chive, lemonbalm & lavender. These all (except the lemonbalm) had pretty flowers, smelled great when you were near them, and had the best yield of everything I grew this year.

Next year I'll be experimenting with lowbush blueberries, betony, garlic & leeks.
    love,
    mom

    Tomato is a given.

Sugar snap peas are good. Eat'm fresh off the plant. They grow like crazy in this cool coastal environment.

Sage. One of my favorite spices. Love to rub the leaves between my fingers and smell the aroma. Fresh mint too.

Tomato is a given, but what kind of tomato? Now that is the question.

Herbs are great in the garden. I love reaching in to pick some veggies and getting a nice scent of basil.

Roma for my Italian dishes. A good hybrid for general use. Beefsteak for my cheesy melts.

All fertilized with 200 year old bat guano from Jamaica.

Oh gosh, my mint!!! I forgot that one! I grew mine in a strawberry pot this year... it looked like a chia-pot within a month & was used daily! Yep, gotta have mint too if you like herbs :)

Makes an excellent tea, come sore throat season. Honey to sweeten.

Never knew a kid to turn down this medicine.

You can always add a little whisky for the trouble cases.

Garlic!!! Good golly Miss Molly, how could I forget?

Life would be a bore without garlic.

I would have to say my favorite is rosemary. Smells great and is drought tolerant and well behaved.

Almost pestless, and don't forget the pretty blue flowers. Can be used as a groundcover, a pot plant, can be topiaried.

I love all kinds of herbs. I think I grow them more for the scent than for anything else!

Sunflower seeds you've grown yourself are top notch when toasted.

Fresh catnip is buku more times potent than that dried out crap you buy in the stores. Stuff some in a couple old socks, tie a string to it, and let the fun begin. My cat will latch onto it and I can drag him around the carpet. :)

This year I tried growing some different tomatoes. I grew some dark ones; black cherry, cherokee purple, black pear, and black brandywine. I really liked these. They are so flavorful. I will probably always have a black cherry growing now as it is like a weed and so great tasting.

I used to like tulips. But then I have sort of been obsessed with weeds. I am curious to Giant Hogweed. It grows very tall, the roots are deep and it has strength to grow through concrete. It is a gardeners curiousity if ever you have one appear in the garden. Like little trees, they certainly are a menace to anything else that grows.

My favorite has been the same since I gardened with my grandma as a kid. Those beautiful purple cone flowers (echenasia?? I can NOT spell that word, but sounding it out kind of works.) will always be my favorite. And I love sunflowers. I've always wanted a field of sunflowers so I could lay in the middle as if they made a little house. Hehehe... Anyone else have dreams like that?

The problem with sunflower fields is the flowers tend to droop and bend as the seeds ripen. I like Echinaecia too, it's always so perky and the color is a contrast to blackeyed Susans.

Never seen giant hogweed, looks pretty impressive though.
