is not a vegetarian.... Even though buddhism strictly forbids to kill any animal, it is ok to eat meat if he offered some.... and if the animal was not killed for his sake (but for the others). he can still eat it if it was killed for someone elses sake!!!! the thing is: buddhism says also that it is ok to eat an animal if it died by accident, and many "accidents" occur in nepal, tibet... Yaks "falling" from cliffs, just like that... it is a strange logic. In tibet, it is quite difficult to be a vegetarian, if you live like the old way: nothin really grows in such altitude (except for one type of barley). They need to eat meat, in a way, but today, the dalai lama live in india, in dharamsala, and i have been there, and it is perfectly possible to be a vegetarian there. But the dalai lama said once, at a dinner hosted by a french president (he was the only one served a vegetarian meal, while the others got meat): " i am tibetan monk, not a vegetarian".
There are many Buddhists that are vegetarian and there are many that are not. While the Dalai Lama is a great figure in Buddhism, he is not the "pope" of Buddhism. Buddhism has no central ruling figure. Thich Nhat Hanh is a vegetarian: http://www.plumvillage.org/HTML/news/letterfromThay.html Buddhism is about being mindful of your actions and cultivating wisdom to make the best choices for your situation.
