I just had to post about this... Earlier this week, I had my son at home with me, and I put some music on...I just felt like holding him and singing, some...so it was a segment of live Bob Dylan, actually, from Carnegie Hall, 26 October 1963- Boots of Spanish Leather, to be exact...I love it, so much...and then I put on Workingman's Dead, and skipped ahead to Black Peter...and I just swayed slowly back and forth a little bit, with him in my arms...singing to him (Black Peter isn't exactly the best kids' song, is it? Hahaha...but I didn't care...and he didn't, either, he was enjoying it). So last night, I put on Hundred Year Hall, and just had him sitting up on the floor, by himself, and the first couple of tunes went by, sort of uneventfully, for him...but then when Next Time You See Me came up, he started rocking back and forth, and bobbing his head up and down- in perfect time with the music! Haha...I had never seen him do that before, in any situation... And then China->Rider, and Jack Straw...same thing...he loved it! Just sitting there on the floor, dancing by himself...it was really, really cool. Just wanted to tell all of you about that.
"Why do humans make music? It doesn't feed us or make you very much money. It doesn't communicate anything tangible. It doesn't do a damn thing. Why do we do it? There has to something spiritual that occurs. It's like dancing. There's no point but we've been doing it for tens of thousands of years. We get something out of it that we don't get from other places." - Reed Mathis
yeah that souns like your kid loves the Dead as much as you do. Who doesnt the Dead is Far out,i love Grateful Dead.
I believe that we like music so much becsause it takes us to a deep/ higher existence or special place. And everyone is equal when it comes to music...I mean if you would go to a dead concert (or any other band that reaches you) and the music was going there is no judement or fear...people can just be themselves. Although I find this a little dissapointing I would say I am most comfortable when I am listening to music. Art does the same thing for me too. To me what musicians and artists do is take everything you believe or feel and make it visual or able to see with your ears. We all want to see our dreams and fantasies come to life...and music does that for us.
I also feel that music is like a secret language that everyone understands. Like different genres would be different languages. Like If you love Phish as much as I do then we would speak Phish or atleast understand it. A good metaphor I heard that deals with music is "We just got hosed". Basically saying that the music just surged over everyone. Its kind of a weird sexual or mental energy that everyone likes and every once in a while we get to feel.
Yeah. Quantifying music is tricky! Interesting observations. It might be a human focussing of the circadian rhythms from which we emerge; heartbeats and the sounds of wind in trees and gurgling streams and warbling birds and thunder and free fall flow, river flow, on and on it goes. Breathe underwater till the end. Yes, the river knows...
Haha thats weird that you say that because I have noticed that my self. I also think that the sounds of nature and our heart have a lot to do with music, especially spiritual music like shaman drums and stuff like that. They do a good job of that in the song Divine Moments of Truth by Shpongle.
