I don't think I've eaten turnips more than a handful of times in my life... and those, when I was very young. Don't know why, I guess I was just never really exposed to them so much.

But, in theinterest of a)expanding my horizons and b) becoming more self-sufficient, I've been thinking about growing them in my spring garden this year. They are supposed to be one of the easier cool-season crops and I want some variety, anyway. :) Of course, I won't be growing them unless I can find some way to prepare them that dh and I both find palettable. I've bought a few from the grocery to play with, and I'm looking for simple easy ways to cook them. Any advice?

Here's what I ended up doing:

Cut up the turnips, along with some apple, put them in a pan with a teeny bit of sugar and about a spoonful of margarine (I used earth balance). Cover with water. Heat and simmer for about 20 minutes.

I liked them. Cooking them this way gave em a pretty mild flavor. I bet raisins would be a great addition, too. My hubby was pretty unimpressed, but didn't dislike them. I think if I can grow them we'll both get accustomed to having them sometimes. :) And I bet they'll make a great addition to my kitchen-sink-soups.

I'll have to try that, I've alwas really liked Turnips but have never prepared them myself.

My aunt usually puts maple syrup (the real deal, not that other stuff) on the turnips and then wraps them up in tinfoil and puts them in the oven (or BBQ). They come out all sweet, it's pretty good.
