"Mental Illness" is a bullshit term. How generalized can you get?

Having schizophrenia or something extreme must suck... I can agree on that.

But... a whole lot of people get depressed. I just don't see how it's an illness. I just think that they are making it sound like an illness so that you keep on buyin' your meds for it.

I'm not saying that it doesn't suck... but I honestly think that the best cure for depression is a good lifestyle, change of habits, or even a complete change of scenery... maybe even some nice hard work outside. Drugs might help... I cannot argue with that... but people cannot truly expect that taking a pill a day will actually make them feel better about life. You forget what life is when all you don't really feel anything.

Point being: Mental Illness is a subject that's extremely overplayed and abused. Everyone and their mom seems to be taking pills for some sort of disorder now.

    It's bullshit.

    ^ thats my point

To me people who go and get pills for this and that are mentally ill, they just seem completley retarded to me. What ever the deffinition of mentally ill is, either way, theres something fucked in their brain.

too many people are misdiagnosed now a days and it's disgusting

my father is bi-polar, he has issues with anger and depression and has manic episodes
i've recently been worried about my older brothers mental health because he's showing signs of manic behavior
but i'm not going to say anything because it's one of the worst things to "psycho-analyze" your family
my family has a history of mental illness, bi-polar and schizophrenia
it makes me fear for my sanity all the time
in high school i had issues with depression which i think was increased by the amount of pot i smoked
i still have extreme mood swings and i fear for myself being bi-polar
but mainly i'm trying my hardest to work through my internal issues, and in the long run i feel i'm going to be fine
right now i'm in a process in my life where i'm focusing on the mental issues i have in order to overcome them

i agree with you in that mental illness frightens me way more than physical injury

your body heals, your mind is the one thing that will be with you for the entirety of your life and quite possibly beyond, it's something that needs to be taken care of

"of all the things i miss, i miss my mind the most" -Ozzy Osbourne

on the other hand, the greatest minds in the history of time had issues with mental illness

I just don't see it as something to fear. I honestly don't mind my quirky mind which has its own episodes... My only problem is that it's a tad hard for me to find motivation to function in this society, when all I really want is for it to let me live and do my own thing.

my brother has psychosis, yeh i do think its a lot worse than physical injury, hes dead inside, out of touch with reality, self absorbed, its a struggle for him to get through each day even, he just sleeps most of the day so he doesnt hear the voices, its really sad

Its really annoying when people say that mental illness is really not an illness..Cause it is.
Someone's brain can be chemically unbalanced. And if thats not an illness....

That is a mental state, not illness.
As I said its only illness if there's something wrong with your brain.

I think everyone is different.. we all vary in how we think etc.. but if we are going to help people with extreme variations of mind.. i.e. szchizophrenia.. not because they are 'ill' but because its difficult to live with.. then doctors need to set a middle line of 'mental health' by which to measure states of mentality with.

Everyone should be comfortable with who they are, but when who they are is extremely different to the majority of people.. they find it difficult to function.

I agree that the only thing that can help most people is a change of lifestyle.. or a bit of counciling.. not medication.. but for some they cannot function without extra help.

A change of lifestyle will only help if you're dealing with a mental state.
Medication is necessary if you're dealing with a mental illness.

Being angry is a mental state.

    Schizophrenia is an illness.

Everyone is on the same spectrum of mental health.. just at different parts of the spectrum.

There is no objective 'mental health' but the majority of people are around the same part of the spectrum.. some vary considerably and those are the people we deem 'mentally ill'.

    No, they are not.
A mental state can be caused by lets say a tough period in your life or something like that. And you can make it better yourself by changing your lifestlye and things like that.
You cant influence mental illness cause at most cases its caused by a chemical unbalance in brain. So even if everything is perfect in ur life and you have the perfect lifestyle, mental illness can ocurr. And to treat it, you need medication.

I think to debate this topic.. i would have to go into a whole lot of things about determinism.. and whether or not we have a mind seperate from the brain.. because if our mind is simply a physical thing.. within our brain.. then everything we do is caused by the balance of chemicals in our head... so mental states and mental illness would both be uncontrolable things.

but if we have a non-physical mind.. our brain could be the reason behind mental 'illness' and our mind could be behind mental 'states'.

If we are an entirely physical thing.. then anger could be a tiny blip in the balance of our brain chemicals.. and szchizophrenia could be an on going major inbalance of our brain chemicals.

Yes, our mind is within our brain.
But a mental state is triggered by outside things , unlike mental illness.
