Anyone ever read it? It's a labyrinth book about a mysterious city called Bellona that has been cut off from the rest of the world by some catastrophe. It's also a circular text, so you can start reading it in various places and it will wrap around on itself. An example of this comes from the very beginning of the book which starts in a fragment:

    to wound the autumnal city.

So howled out for the world to give him a name.

    The in-dark answered with wind.

It's certainly a strange and interesting work... it's classified as "science fiction" but I don't think that's really the best way to describe it. There are some sections that border on erotic fictions and still others that are more reflection writing... I think the lack of straight linear story is why it's hard to just classify it, and probably why a lot of science fiction fans hated it (I'm not a big science fiction person myself). In the forward people draw some parallels to the text and the hippie movement of the 60s. I'm not sure about all that just yet...

It's sort of like House of Leaves in some sense, only Dhalgren is from the 70s... it's got all sorts of sub-texts in it like news papers, notebooks, etc which sort of become part of the work...

Anyone have any thoughts on this book?
