I've been thinking a lot about life lately. I've looked at the "normal" life as this; go to school for 13 years attend college for 4 to 8 years get a 9-5 job get weekends to pursue your "hippieness" (as my mother puts it) retire and do what you want till you die. I think there's got to be a better way of life. Let's say I do get a job. How am I supposed to choose what to do in college if all I've experienced is school. What if I travel the world, find who I am, and pursue what I want to do or find my bliss? Unfortunately, my parents have been telling me I have two choices; go to college and get a job and pursue my dreams in the summer (oh joy) and on weekends or flip hamburgers. My mother says "I don't want to raise a useless hippie>" Thanks mom. What should I do (I have about 4 years to think about this). What are really my options? Thanks!!
IMO. I would finish high school before I would make any plans. We NEED SMART People, with brain cells left to run the country/community. When you become old enough to get out on your own things change in prospective. What fancies you now may not as you grow into yourself. I started when I was your age, hangin' with the big dogs, taking too much on for my limited experience. As I went through my life, I regretted not finishing school, so I went back when I was 40 and completed high school, then on to collage. I had to work in hard labor jobs with little pay untill I got educated.. well I got the peice of paper saying I learned my lessons..of course my real education came from living life and experiencing things for myself. Hold fast to your dreams, but learn all you can about what it takes, before you venture out on your own. Bright Blessings on your journey sh
I don't see why a 9 til 5 job is the only option after you finished college. If you start working now, you know that is what you get for sure though. And can't you pursue your 'hippieness' in school?
the mistake people make is thinking for those 30 or so years your working that 9-5 job it's just the same monotonous days over and over again. your forgetting about the humans endless curiosity that continues until the day you die. I'm right now at the beginning of my life at 25 and know no matter if i have 1 job till i retire or 20, i'm still gonna make the best of life and question things and experience things and have new beginnings till the day i die. your entire life is innocent, not just the first 20 years. stop worrying.
You are going to change your mind about what to do after high school soooo many times until then. Go to school. e.g. my friend, who i would consider a "hippy", is going to college for outdoor recreation. He has traveled to alaska and now to South ammerica to study. He plans on working outdoors leading tours, or outings, or specialize in instructing one outdoor sport such as rock climbing or skiing. College degree does not = 9-5 desk job. You are going to need to support yourself. How do you plan to travel the world? it cost money, and the money comes after college. Your options open up 20 fold with a degree, what degree is up to you.
