Does death hurt?

During the french revolution it was common place for the executioner to pick up a head and look into the eyes for signs of life





Sometimes the eyes would move and on other occasions the mouth would move (as If the victim was trying to speak)

But were the victims still self-aware, or were their responses autonomic?
