Gonna start the journey soon..but Im concerned b/c IMO I have a dry scalp. I just washed my hair yesterday and it itches like crazy. My scalp is so dry that I could probably go a week or so and noone would no. I dont have flakes or anything...could it be the cheap ass shampoo Im using that makes it so dry?!

IS this gonna cause problems or is the better for dreads?

theres nothing wrong with going a week without washing. in the summer, i dont wash my hair more than every month or two. if you have a dry scalp, its good to let some oil happen for moisture (too much is bad to of course, you gotta try a balance.)
it could definitly have something to do with shitty shampoo. wash with soap!

thats a beautiful song in your sig wanderin_blues

and yea just dont wash it for a while, see what happens. Personally i think its quite bad for your hair to wash it with shampoo daily

I used to wash my hair with shampoo 3 times a day.

I was once every two weeks, but won't be again until my Doc Bronners comes in.

    I can't wait!

Now, I'm not an expert on dry hair/scalp because I have the opposite problem... but I read somewhere that hard water and shampoo is a really bad combo. Perhaps you live in an area with hard water that only compounds your dry scalp issue? (if you don't know you can quickly google it online). I read that washing with a baking soda concoction instead of traditional shampoo could help. If fact, I read that the only reason conditioner was invented was to counteract the negative effects of shampoo in hard water areas.

Definitely only wash your hair as often as you feel you need to, which is probably less than average. I'd say average with dreads is about once a week... so you could probably get away with *much* less (whereas I have to wash several times a week because my scalp gets so damn oily).

Good luck with your new dready journey :D Remember, we all have different hair types, body chemistry, etc... so experiment with what works for YOU rather than trying to adhere to what other folk say. You become the expert of your dreads and your dreads only :)

i wash my bangs every day or two or three, and wash my dreads when i feel they're getting icky. usually a couple times a week. the best thing is to let your hair tell you what to do. if it feels gross and greasy, wash it! if it feels fine, let it go.

Well, I found out that I have hard water...so I guess thats why my DD's diapers are stinkin when they get pee'd in too huh?( another thread on another forum for another day, lol...) But it makes sense..I have really dry itchy skin too..sometimes my skin literally feels like its drinking lotion..

Gonna go get ya a before picture before I start...

BTW- do you need to use wax to get started? Ive read so much conflicting stuff in the past few weeks my head is spinning..some ppl say "Stay away" some" you need it to get started, but then ditch it" Some say," use it through out"...AHH!

You're better off never ever using wax. People who do for the most part are people who have been scammed by companies that sell wax.
