sorry to make you disapointed. i got some facts today about crops that are used where rainforest used to grow. In south east asia: plam oil is really the number one crop, spreading everwhere and destroying..... palm oil is found in margarine, cookies, shampoo, candybars etc... everthing that says "vegetable oil" is probably palm oil, because they want to try to hide it.... so look out for it! In the amazon, today: soy is the biggest crop that is taking over rainforest land. a lot of it goes as food to cattle, but not all of it. it you do buy soy, try to make sure it doesnt come from brasil.
A lot of the palm oil is used to make biodiesel. Probably more than is used for food. I'm an environmentalist, but I have huge issues with biofuels for just that reason. Olive and canola oils are healthier anyway. You are right that most of the soy goes to feed cattle. It takes 16 pounds of soybeans to produce a pound of beef! Just not eating beef makes a HUGE difference. You might be interested in this website http://www.crescentlife.com/dietnutrition/food_realities.htm Very enlightening. One fact-it takes 20 times more land to feed a meat eater than a vegetarian.
