Hmm....maybe I don´t talk about Hippie community like in the movie Easy Rider (or about these what you mean), but in my country (Slovakia) are familiarly solitary cottages called Zaježová. It´s near to biger city Zvolen and some years before, lot of native people moved to the town because of the job. Many houses and homesteads stayed uninhabited so one time it was possible to live there for a very small fee or for free. Since there came a several men and families there, now they want for their community people who want to live also by some rules (help with some collective works like scramble a hay on the summer....), relationship to nature, craft etc.
People there put across lot of unique things...they have own food-stuff bank, which includes bio, homemade or fair trade supplies, last time they talked about ,,time bank", they have own currency ,,Ježe" (Hedgehogs). In our language Zaježová means something like ,,behind hedgehogs" ´cuz Hedgehogs is name of a hill and for people from neighbour village were people from solitary cottages ,,behind hedgehogs men" :))

But back from history...for those people who lives especially on the parts of Zaježová: Sekier and Polomy are important freedom, do their own thing, for everybody something different :) but the main idea is live a full-value life in unity with nature, understanding with people....

They also worked on a loam houses, they organising events, gatherings, workshops....it is little bit something like cultish place for enviromentalists, nature and lot of interesting people. Oh, and they have also a recycling center ! And last summer there was an international European gathering Ecotopia. Sometimes there are not only Slovaks, also friends from Switzerland lived there....

Well, sorry for long topic....if you want to brows some photos, check the links with dates, down on their site: http://www.zajezka.sk/obrazky.htm

Not sure where you're at... but seasonally there's slab city: http://www.slabcity.org/

There are also hostels and stuff if you felt like bumming around, earning money doing ________ it's not really living without anything since depending on where you are in the world that's more or less possible.

Personally I'd suggest trying to work with what's around and living as you see fit. A complete removal from all people isn't going to be the picnic it may seem like, at the end of the day we all need each other. Though admittedly a "city" is not the ideal.

alekk, what does it mean commercial in yours ? Did you also read ,,about Sekier" part ? I know, people there are not sure if they are community or not, they have also some rules and lot of people make from Zaježová ,,really-hippy place" which is not true, but I know a lot of people from there or who lived there for a year or much more, and living in the Sekier was for their something really different from the life in the cities or life in the typicall Slovak villages.

Those people also don´t like if somebody who come have some romanticize ideas about their, beacuse everybody do his own thing and people are different like in everywhere. But you can try visit some event or ask through the email and maybe you will not disappointed.

A great place to find many communities living outside of the cities is http://www.ic.org/

The site lists all kinds of communes large and small around the world. Many are free to live there as long as you participate. Alot ask for small contributions of money in order to keep the land rights etc..

I was very pleased when I found that if I could make my way to Hawaii, there are some great places that will let you live off of the land in return for work.

Hope you find what your looking for!
