I don't mind if people actually have something they want to talk about, but I hate when people try to make small talk, like in elevators.
    stranger: "Man, it's windy outside!"
    me: "yeah..."
stranger: "like it came out of nowhere. yesterday it was so not windy. and today it's so freaking windy. it's crazy, huh?"
    me: "yeah..."
    stranger: "man. it's like..SOO WINDY."

Anyone have a special technique to communicate to them you don't want to talk without being rude?

I don't mind talking to people as long as they dont have a big wart on thier nose..it is really hard to concentrate when they have those...other than that, I love talking to everyone.

I love it. The only time I dont is when someones assumes were allies, and says something political or religious or sexist or racist or talks shit about someone else, and they expect I will laugh and agree or at the very least, hold my tongue. I generally try to show them that I am not amused.

Yea that doesnt sound like the most comfortable elevator ride, but generally Im okay with people and small talk. Ill play along. Because for some people, just a LITTLE pleasant human interaction is just what the doctor ordered, and with that 45 seconds of semi-akward conversation, if you don't make them feel stupid for talking to you, you might have just made their day. That makes it worthwhile doesn't it?

    Hi telephone,
The thing is they’re on autopilot and not thinking about what they’re saying. You just have to throw them a curve ball.
Like in your example I’d say something like: yeah I know, ‘cause just before I came in, I had to walk around the block three times because I kept getting blown by the front door before I could get in. (you could say any thing as long as it's not what they're expecting)
That usually brings them up short and they have to think about what they’re going to say next. Then a real conversation ensues.

hahaha. i'm going to start responding with extremely ridiculous things. "Yeah, well, i'm allergic to wind, so you really dont' have it that bad, do you? [IMG]"

No, I do not mind random people strike up conversations with me.

Unless they are trying to sell me on a Network marketing scam.

Then I want to duct tape them to the ceiling.

i'll second that emotion. really depends on what i'm doing at the time and if they have anything to say redeaming of the thought space their saying it occupies.

about the only time i'm ever where there ARE any "random people" is when i'm on the bus or other public transportation. jw's, later day morons and other, oh so holy 'rollers', are of course in the same catigory as network scamers, if not an even more demonic one in my book.

i'm not really interested in anyone trying to sell anything, on line or in real life either one. if i wan't to buy something i'll study catalogues and specifications first, and then go into a store someplace where i can fondle it for a while before making up my mind whether or not i really want one.

on the other hand, i love when creative imaginative people talk about things i AM interested. generally things that involve creating and exploring as well, nonautomotive transportation tecnologies, and those which can be used creatively and the tecniques of doing so.

those mostly i find in intrest groups, rather then randomly. i wish more random people were more like that.

spirituality isn't a completely tabu subject either, just the familiar arbitrary cleche's of massively popular organized beliefs.

i have no problem with the idea of a universe full of things we can't possible begin to know. only with people who claim to know them.
