Saw the film Ghandi there today part of the Fact on Film thing on National Gepgraphic, hadn't seen the films in a few years, quality flick and what a great man. I think all most of us can do is strive to be as accepting and peaceful as he was.

I love the flik, I've watched it so many time, nonviolence is so beautiful, and look how Gandhi lived, his spirit carries on, it was such a message, his very being!

I have read a little of his auto-biography here and there, haven't yet finished, one day I will though.

I must say it is a great movie to watch on mescaline, whoa!

Speaking of Ghandi, I watched that movie in a comparitive religon class last year. I was very impressed by it, and it really opened my mind to a very understanding way of spirituality unfortunatly a christian boy in my class had to make an announcement after the video that Ghandi is in hell because he didn't except Christ as his only savior. Whats everyone think about that, is someone as incredible as Ghandi really in hell because he doesn't accept Christ? I defiently dont believe that.

Nah I don't buy it eithier.

The Dali Lama stated that it didn't matter what person's spirituality was, as long as they were a good person. Which my general view on the matter.

If the Christian God is going to forgive anyone, no matter how evil, just because they believe in him (Hitler was Christian). Yet keep out Ghandi just because he was a Hindu.... Well then they can shove it.

Not that I actually believe in hell, IMO it's just Christian/Jewish/Islamic scare mongering.

Wow ~ we just rented Ghandi & I was not really looking forward to sitting through a 3 hour movie but now I am excited to see it!

I don't know that I can agree that Hitler was a Christian just because he said he was though ~ anyone who truly believed in love could never have imagined the things he did... there's a big difference between just saying you believe it & actually living it!

I can't believe that kid stood up & said that ~ he should be a little less concerned with judging others... especially when he can not really know what God's judgement would be.

There is no Jewish hell or place of eternal condemnation. The closest thing is gehenna. When one dies, good deeds are weighed against sin with God looking to tip the scales in a person's favor. If they don't pass, they go to Gehenna for no more than 12 months. Gehenna is like a forge where one is transformed somehow. Some suggest it's by experiencing the ways they've made others suffer in life. When a person is finished there, they go on to Gan Eden, which is a good place. If someone does not change after 12 months, their soul is extinguished. God is just and merciful. Only someone completely and utterly wicked could possibly be extinguished anyway.

There's also support in the Jewish community for the idea of reincarnation, especially through mystical traditions. Me, I don't have any strong feelings about the afterlife. It's this life that matters right now.

Also, it doesn't condemn non-Jews to any awful fate or lack-of-place-to-go after life. I think Hell actually comes from some of the ideas of the Romans. When Islam came onto the scene, they took on something inspired in some ways by Christian beliefs.

Edit: And it is at this time that I would like to strongly object to the term Judeo-Christian. For differences between the two, see here:

What an ignoramous, he's just one of these hardline Christians. It's such a shame, that after watching the entire film he didn't realise that it's not about what religion you are but more about what your like as a person.
