The recent shooting at a campus in Illinois has suddenly revealed just how easily your computer can be traced.

Police & FBI agents investigating the shootings searched a hotel room at a DeKalb, Illinois, hotel Friday in connection with the deadly shooting. Police were looking for a specific Toshiba laptop computer, and one was found in the room and turned over to investigators. A bomb squad also swept the hotel room for explosives.

So not only had the police traced the last Internet postings of the shooter, but they easily found the location he sent it from, and what's more chilling, were able to identify the make and model of the machine he sent it from, before even seeing it.

That must mean ISPs are recording more than the usual IP#s in their logs these days, but also managing somehow to identify the actual computer accessing the web.

This feature was enabled with the cooperation of both Microsoft and Intel (and likely other chip makers). Intel adds an identifying # to every processor it sells. Microsoft Windows records and now logs that # and other info along with everything you do on your computer, including every web access.

I'm not sure why, but this sends a chill down my spine. If there ever was a reason to use a different operating system, this may be it!

I'm quite sure that if you have Windows running on your system, if someone with the right access wants to, they can locate you, access everything on your computer, and probably see what you are currently doing on it.

Now if that don't make your hair stand on end, nothing will...

off topic: sweet sig pic, skip.

on topic: this degree of power is what we get with congressional unity. *shudders* whip the people into a froth of fear and they'll hand over all their privacy rights.

Yes mama, and BUSH wants even MORE POWER to spy on you!

And the bill before Congress, which the Dems are ignoring provides immunity for the Telecoms for doing just this type of activity!

Now if they had been able to STOP the crime beforehand (think about the Pre-crime unit from the movie Minority Report), that would be a justification, but unfortunately this power rarely PREVENTS a crime, but only helps with forensics afterwards.

And after the fact, there is no need to pretend there's an imminent danger, so they can easily use the existing FISC courts to get a search warrant under the law as it was before. So there is no need to EXPAND federal search powers to allow such searches without judicial review.

Never use the Internet from your grow (if it's not a legal grow). That goes along with the truism never grow where you live. I thought all growers knew that. ;)

suprisingly, seems some people feel safe about their security with the internet..IF I had a grow, I surely wouldn't have my computer in the same location.

I've known about this for a while. All electronic transactions are being monitored by the NSA and the Department of Total Information Awareness 24/7. People should look into the programs Echelon and Carnivore. They can literally see what you're typing, as you type it on the screen if they want.

I think most people would be very scared if they knew of all the advanced technology that's out there, including satellites that can look through the walls of your house.

It doesn't depend on the operating system you use. They can see what you're doing at any time, regardless of the program you're using.

Yeah and I guess the government wants this shit to result in more extreme gun laws when being a gun free environment HELPED this shit happen..

Pilots shouldn't have emergency guns in the cockpit to prevent stuff like 9/11 happening???

Teachers shouldn't be allowed to have emergency guns behind glass which could reduce school shootings to maybe a couple injured instead of just waiting until the killer has finished his murders pree ??

Of course not... They want to take your guns away from you. The only thing that gives the people power over the government.. and I'm not saying this is a staged event, but with events like this the people are stupid enough to say HERE, TAKE AWAY OUR LIBERTIES..

The only protection the people have EVER had against the government is our own guns... what happens when they take them away? Do moronic people actually think there would be less crimes and killings? Do you know how many murders that happen in areas in texas where EVERYONE and their neighbor has guns? very little..

People need to think for themselves sometimes.. It's sickening how easily they're brainwashed into blatant conditioning to accept their own ENSLAVEMENT under different pretenses.

Of course they don't want to prevent it.

Remember when police stood outside of virginia tech for 3 hours?

Remember them LOCKING THE STUDENTS IN so there could be a higher body count?

And ironically people had NOTHING bad to say about those fucking cowardly pigs..

That's bullshit. There is no radiation band that can penetrate walls and be used for imaging without a line of sight detector.

Umm... dude, of course ISPs have more information than the regular IP address. There are free DNS global locating tools out there on the net, some will decipher proxies, etc.

But that's beside the point. All ISP providers have are the make, serial number even and brand of your computer and that kind of info. They have your address since you subscribe to them.

Private companies are required to disclose that kind of information to the police during an investigation.

This isn't something new. But good to know and talk about nonetheless.

Well, they don't just spy on anybody. They don't a fuck about 99% of people, they aren't going to expose little Jimmy for watching Bang Bros, son. If you are a liable threat then that might give them reason too. It's like having a warrant out for your arrest.

The patriot act. the act President Bush camp implemented after 9/11.

    This is MASINT:

Thermal Infrared (JR) Heat Imaging Where are the hot spots and how does the target look when in operation

Near IR Imaging Just past visible light; used by night vision goggles; camouflage detection and use in night operations

Acoustic Signatures What does the system sound like, or where is a target such as a sniper

Seismic Data How much does the ground shake when the target roles past
Imaging Radar Data Seeing through smoke, haze, foliage, and even water to try to detect and identify a target

Laser Imaging and Detection Use of laser imaging systems for target and chemical/biological agent detection; detection and classification of emitters

Sorry, but none of these spectrocopic methods permit imaging. The best they can get is a blob or a trace, and they'd have no way to tell if you're doing the maid or making a cheese sandwich.
