I read the ultimate hitchhikers guide (all books in one book) a couple months ago and really enjoyed it. Great story. The movie was ok, it could have been much better.

the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy was originally a bbc radio broadcast. i have no idea if these radio programs are available to the average joe. i've certainly never heard them or seen them for sale, but i haven't looked either

it was later made into five books. they are:
the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
the restaraunt at the end of the universe
    life, the universe and everything
so long, and thanks for all the fish

    and finally, mostly harmless

there was also a television series based off all these stories and ideas on the BBC in the 80s. it's god-awful in a very endearing way.

the movie is one of the few movies i've ever walked out of, mostly due to not knowing what time it was and not wanting to be late for work (the movie seemed to drag, and i didnt know how long it was) and the fact that as it was dragging on a bit, i was bored and unimpressed by it.

since then i've watched it several times and have enjoyed it far more than the first time i watched it.

its actually the last movie i downloaded. i like it pretty well, but the books are far superior, and also quite lengthier (which is better in my mind...when i like something, i dont want it to run out quickly. i have a huge tome containing all the books, and it takes a good bit of time to read it cover to cover.

one of my all time favorite choices for light reading. its very, very funny.

the movie is quite different in some respects, but then the tv show also differs from the books some, and i'm sure the books differ from the radio show a bit, though i couldnt tell. the books are the most extensive, most well done, and most entertaining of the forms of the HHGTG that i'm familiar with, though the radio series is the original form and i've never heard it....

i guess the radio show should really be the standard people measure by....but whatever

read the books, they're great. and you will probably save a little money getting the big all-inclusive book rather than buying them one at a time. or go to the library. the books are very well known and liked, they've been around a while (the last one was written in the early nineties, and i think the first one in 79 or something)

but read them, i really encourage it! some of the best sci-fi and best comedy ever at the same time, in my opinion.

in the movie when they're standing in line to get trinity released from the vogons, you see to the side a big, blocky looking robot...it's marvin from the tv program making a cameo.

i try to take the tv show, movie, and books seperately. they all tell a similar story, but its always arranged a different way with different parts left in or out. the books are great, but i like all i know of at least a little. the tv show was bad though. awful, really....but like i said, sort of endearingly so.

i could see why todays audiences would almost universally dislike it. but its kind of a cult classic in terms of tv shows

i always loved the radio program but i dont think the movie justice. the movie by itselfs is very funny but it doesnt match up to the books or radion program

I watched this last night, and once my dad leaves I will watch it again. I really enjoyed the movie, and plan on reading the books.
