I need some advice. I have a friend who is bulimic. She has always had a problem with thinking shes fat, but she really isn't. It really gets to her and I am really worried about her. It's becomming a daily thing. She'll eat a shit load and just puke it up. She is not the kind of person to just do things for attention. She is a very independent thinker. But I feel like she is doing this just for attention. I've told her that she needs to stop and that it's such an unhealthy thing to do. She says she knows but she doesn't care cause she likes being bulimic cause then she won't be fat. I just don't know what to do. She refuses to stop no matter what I say. She has been doing it for about a month now. I don't want something to happen to her because I care a lot about her. Any advice is appreciated.

There really is not any true medical facts that says it is bad for you to be bulmeic. unless you get too thin. Usually with bulemia you don't get too thin.

If she likes being bulminic then I say there is nothing you can do. It would be like her telling you to stop smoking pot because she cares a lot about you and thinks it could be harmful.

Is this really true? I haven't exactly done extensive research on it, but from what I've heard it can cause problems. I mean it can't be good to be puking that often. If you could provide me with articles or something saying that it really isn't harmful that'd be great. If thats how she wants to live then thats fine with her and me as long as it isn't hurting her like you have said.

I know this is wikipedia and anyone can edit it, but they're usually pretty good about being as accurate as possible: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulimia_nervosa#Consequence

I'm a pretty open minded person so if you can show me that it's not as bad as it is made out to be, that would really make me feel better. But I've never heard anyone say it isn't unhealthy to be bulimic. I'm not going to stop her, it's her choice. I don't know..

I guess I did not really mean that it was healthy to be bulemic. On a site called mamashealth.com it says this about bulimia:

    Bulimia Statistics

    • Bulimia affects about 10% of college age women in the United States.
    • About 10% of individuals diagnosed with bulimia are men.
    • 10% of individuals suffering from bulimia will die from either starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide.
So if 10% of people who are bulimic will die from the reasons above, that means that 90% will not die from being bulimic...right?.

I personally just hate it though when people get on me about my eating choices, then go around smoking pot, doing mushrooms, cocaine, LSD, getting drunk, etc.

I do those things too, but I don't think it is anymore healthy to smoke pot or do other drugs than it is to be concerned about one's weight.

If she is not severe she won't die from it...but take it from someone who has spent thousands on root canals, crowns and inlays she is going to be spending A LOT of time at the dentist if she doesn't stop.
And enentualy her metabolism will get screwed up and it willt ake a lot for her to lose weight after all of those years of tricking her body into being full.
