Hi peeps, I was walking though my local area looking for what may be some decnt spots to grow and i have found the perfect place. It's camo, good soil and lots of sunlight. (Except it is infested with badgers) If i were to just go up there with a spade and some compost. Rough up the ground a bit, nice and airy. Then order some seeds. Would that be enough? Would it be wise to buy some sort of nutients? So, If you could possibly name a desent compost make(Uk) OR somthing to look for in a compost. Nutients, if so what type? When is the best time to seed? Considering it's Feb and spring is comming. Thanks guys
hmm the badgers sound like a big problem. maybe you could get some animal repel spray, they make them for rabbits, deer, ect. sounds like a good spot, as long as your sure no one will find it. if it's found police will likely burn it, although the chances of you getting caught are nearly nil. seed when its warm enough, although make sure it's spring for sure, if it warms up in mid feburary you may think it's spring time, but get hit by a cold spell and kill your crop. so I would say late march/ early april just to be safe. not sure about brands of compost/nutriets, however. hope this helps
start your seeds indoors about 4 to 5 weeks before you transplant. they'll have a good root mass and will transplant better. use a compost as mulch to hold water in the soil. plants should have plenty of nutrients in the soil already but if you want to add more use something that's going to decompose over time, like composted manure. a liquid means more trips in to tend your grow. treat the badgers with respect and leave food for them like honeycomb, or uncooked veggies. they'll look forward to your visits.
Start seeds in proper seedling and cutting compost... it has less nutrients and won't burn the seedshoot or young roots of small seedlings. Start in as deep a pot as possible 6 - 10 inches would be good. Try and grow them to at least 10 inches tall before they go out in the wild, ie, just big enough to fend of a minor slug attack and a bit of rabbit interest. Badgers may dig around a bit at the base of your plants but shouldn't be a real threat. A minimum size hole would be about 16" deep and a foot wide ... bigger is better. Don't put them out there until the end of April or begining of May. If you can put some 'potting on' compost (stronger in nutrients) in there then that would be great. Add some fish/blood/bone, rotted chicken manure (or you can buy chicken manure pellets), a tiny bit of calcified seaweed for trace elements ( although you can buy trace elements in chemical/plant food form to make a solution with). You could put some wood ash in there or maybe even some vermiculite to retain water and air ( a big sack costs about 6 quid and dry, it's lightweight). Oh 'tomorite' is a good all round plant food for pot.
