Just make sure to keep it natural, NO WAX, and a lot of patience and hard work, at the beggining dreadlock are very high maintenance.

About the size of your dreads, it depends of the method you use to do your dreads, when you section your hair for backcombing the average size of each section is about 1in, but if you decide to let your hair dread by itself you will have all kind of different sizes and shapes.

this isn't true at all. i backcombed and haven't done a single thing to my dreads since. if i could do it over again, i'd let them form on their own. presto, it's done without any effort at atll.

I guess you are pretty lucky, for my experience and plenty of people Ive talked about it, everyone at the beggining had a hard time trying to keep their dreads locked. I guess it depends of the kind of hair and the conditions.

no, they'll look like crap for a few months, but maintained and non-maintained dreads lock up in about the same time. one just takes a lot more work. dreads are supposed to be a no-work hairstyle, so it drives me nuts when i hear people say they spend more time on their hair post-dreads than they did pre-dreads. if that's your thing, it's cool, but i just can't be fussed!

I dunno. If I wasn't constantly ripping, my head would merge into one giant congo.

I spend a lot more time on my hair now that I have dreads than before.

The reason is I want my dreads to look as neat as possible all the time.

It is a personal thing but personally I don't like the messy straggly end look, I like the nice round dreads with the blunt rounded ends but that's just me.

    Each to their own

ive had mine 18 yeaqrs, i spend maybe 5 minutes every couple weeks seperating em, dreads dont take work at all, they'll just happen if u let em, the only work involved is occassionaly seperating em so they dont grow together...all that extra work is just wasted time
no matter what you do...no matter how many hours ya waste trying to force your dreads to be a cesrtain way..in the end they'll do whatever theuy wanna do
i think this is why so many onhere dont get past a year or 2, they get frustrated with all the time they waste tryin to force theyre dreads to be a certain way then when things dont turn out that way they just give up...but if u waste no time, just let em do theyre thing, theres no disatisfaction, no sence that youve wasted all that time and they didnt turn out how you hoped, cause your just accepting that they will do what they wanna do, turn out the way theyre meant to, youcant go wrong when you just let em do theyre thing
after all, isnt that what dreads are? hair ion its natural form?

as usual, soaring eagle said it. thats how i feel about it anyway: dreads are not a hairstyle, they are the natural state of your hair.
