I started my dreads on July 3, 2007, which makes them about 7 1/2 months old. I'm seriously considering combing them out. They don't look bad, they're just really short. I'm not sure if I would be happier with long straight hair, however. Could someone give me some advice, encouragement, or at least tell me how quickly my dreads will grow? (Sorry for no pics, I can't find the digital camera)

My friend combed hers out and whilst she had her hair back it was in a real bad condition.
So just a word of warning that if you are looking for hair that is long and looks good combing them out might not be the best idea. How short are they? They will grow in time.

The front ones come to my top lip and the back ones poke annoyingly on my shoulders.

thats not short at all, mine are that length. Also i combed mine out at xmas and redid them, and saw the condition of each strand, i gotta warn you that if you do comb them out dont expect to be able to run a straightener throught them and have long straight hair again...

id keep em, 71/2 months is a long time to invest to just change your mind.

i'm with everybody else. that's a long time to just comb em out, plus, that's actually pretty long. i thought when you said short ya meant they probably weren't even to your eyes or something..lol. when mine were that short they were annoying, but keep yer head up^^. it's totally worth it!

mine are a day younger than yours and shrinking like mad. i have really thin, fine hair and they just keep shrinking. i'd say probably around a year, i'll expect to gain some length. i'd hang in there at least until the year point - if you want to turn back after that, at least you stuck it out til they're more mature!

I had them for a little longer than that and I combed them out. I wished I never had. It seems like a hassle now, but after you get rid of them you'll miss them.

Mine are that long as well. I know what you mean about the shoulder annoyance though - this is the longest my hair's been in over a decade so it feels wierd to have hair poking my neck and such. But damn! Don't comb 'em out over that. Eventually they'll be lovely and long locks.

i actually also came on here to ask about combing out. i've only had me for like 2 months, but they are driving me nuts, plus i honestly wasnt planning on having them much more than a year anyways. so...i was wondering how you do it and if there are any products you recommend. i saw dreadheadhq has some concentrated conditioner stuff you can use. any other suggestions?

Honestly, you should not have even gotten them if that was the case.

Well if you did not put much thought into getting them, and they are annoying you, dont put to much thought into taking them out. But i assure you they will stop annoying you. If your going to want to comb them out anyway then do it now. It will not only be extremely hard once you hit a year, but your hair will never go back to how it was, even if you comb them out now.

If you didn't get them simply as a fashion statement, keep them.

i say comb them out. you'll regret it and it'll make you appreciate your dreads much more the second time around.

Don't comb them out, let them be as little seeds, and they will surely grow into long phat, amazing locks.
Patience is the key my friend.

Thanks jahmerimaka, cause I didn't just get them as a fashion statement, and you've helped me rememeber why I started them. Still though, does anyone know at about what rate they grow? just curious

so your dreads are short and if you comb them out it will take a while before you have long hair again? looks like you gonna need some patience either way!
