Hey guys just a few questions, First one I am planning to start around the end of april do you think that is a good time to begin? ( im also in ohio ) . Second question is after iv germinated them how far to i put them in the soil? Thanks, peace
don't plant until after the last frost date, cincinatti is 4/29 and athens is 5/31. if the soil/higher is drier plant the rootball a little below soil level but if it's wetter/lower then plant it a little higher than soil level. if you can hold off transplanting until your plants have a good root mass going, they'll have a much easier transition, get a better start now and better yield later.
The most common answer iv'e heard is to grow them inside/greenhouse for 4-5 weeks then transplant them outside. This will ensure they have a head start and can quickly aborsb thoese rays!
In England the standard time for putting plant out under the sun is the begining of May ... light levels are now high enough to support quicker growth. Seeds can now be started happily under NATURAL light as opposed to artificial lighting. If the weather is good in the latter part of April, then put them out then.
You have to find out when the last frost is. An easy way is to go to a nursery (for plants that is ) and ask them when it is safe to plant annuals or vegetables. If you begin indoors and have them ready for your plot you can get a good spring harvest and then plant again for the fall harvest.
