I have a year and few months old Shih Tzu, his name is Ozzie --- he's neutered and has a few allergies but otherwise healthy. My opinion is that he is a victim of overbreeding or inbreeding. He's got some weird weird mannerisms, for example, he'll sit and look at some things like he has no idea what they are, where they came from or if they're even real --- BUT --- I've had his eyesight tested and he can see fine. It's just like there's something unplugged in his little head that keeps the message from getting there. AND - He's just not interested in obedience, not at all, which is a first for me, I've never had a dog that didn't show any interest at all in being eager to please. So --- Anyone have any ideas about how to deal with an overbred, disinterested, allergic dog??? On the flip side, he can be SO SO SO sweet, and he follows me everywhere and doesn't like it when I'm gone so he does have some dog-ish qualities!!! I just love him, I only wish he'd get some obedience going, etc. Thanks for your time, G.
I have six dogs, two of them being Shih Tzu, (Gizmo, and Toby) Mine are great but they do lack the desire to please, I think it's the fact that they have been breed to be companion dogs, (they don't have a job) ya know like a collie, or lab or pointer, Shih Tzu's are very good at being your buddy, I have found that mine were very hard to house train, and as far as obedience goes you could try a trainer but I really do not think you will much luck. I advice would be just love your puppy and try your best to get him house trained, you might get him to sit and stay but it will be hard and take alot of work. If I can be of any help please feel free to PM me.
Hi! I have a Shih Tzu/poodle mix male,I named him Chopper. I got him from a vet as a playmate for my other Shih Tzu,Buzz. I began to notice little bumps on Buzz' head soon after Choppers arrival. I sat back once to quietly observe what they did when I wasn't around. Chopper pounced on Buzz' little noggin' snapping & growling. So much for a playmate! I loved Buzz! I found him a great home,a girl whose dog died of old age. I kept the mean assed little sucker 'cause I didn't want anyone else to have to handle his 'moods',plus he'd had numerous homes already...he'd been dropped at the vets because he snapped at folks!A biter!Well,Chopper STIll bites when I groom him,but he is the Best little doggie alarm system!! I live in the sticks,he has a people bark,a critter bark,a delirious get the fuck out here bark(I grab my gun & 'go see') I've tried pills to calm him from the vet,the bottle said to give him 5! I only gave him 1/4 of a tab & he went into seizures! Perhaps the vet wanted him dead?
