My job requires programming ability. Where does this job of your's take place? Mostly in an office, though I also work from home and sometimes travel to various places for special projects. If I've got $0 I'm down to work in order to take care of myself since I don't like to take handouts from people, or take away a handout from someone who needs it more. I don't consider driving a nice car, eating at fancy restaurants, or owning a yacht getting by.
