When you write, where do you get your inspiration from? Is it from within, or do you look towards other people or things in order to get those creative juices flowing?

It's definitely inside. Sometimes listening to certain songs inspires me (whatever I was listening to when I wrote a really good page in my story tends to work for me on other parts of it). With poetry, I just think of what's going on in the world around me, and it gets me writing. I don't sit and wait until I feel inspired, for me it has to come naturally, then I write.

    Same as Sunburst :)

Ideas often come to me late at night. Some are good at the time but lame in the morning. So I just have to mull them over a bit.

Overheard conversations, the new, anything really [/fatherted]

I basically have spent ages just starting stories halfway through, trying to inspire myself as I go. Then every now and then I get a flash of inspiration and I'll just write and write. Hasn't happen for a while though, and it tends to end up being very similar to a film I haven't seen or somesuch.

The thing that doesn't work is vomit writing, that is just writing everything you can think of down and then basically throwing it away. It's good for catharsis but very little else.

The best general tip I can offer is not to spend ages thinking about how your novel is going to begin; first lines are notoriously hard to come up with. If you think of a really good ending, write that, then decide how you're going to come to it. There's nothing really wrong with building the story up from one "scene" if that scene is strong enough. But trying to start at the beginning kind of dooms you to hours staring at a laptop in despair.

A little of both, I think...

Every man's work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or anything else, is always a portrait of himself, and the more he tries to conceal himself the more clearly will his character appear in spite of him.”- Samuel Butler

It's the little things people say and do, the way they interact, that inspires me. Unfortunately they don't give me the big ideas to write that novel, so for now I'll stick to the poems!

I write about my emotions and feelings, ironically a lot of my work is about love and hearbreak.

Ideas usually come from the radio, reading, late at night, or driving around town. Other's are dreams that come early morning. I stay up long enough to get ideas before I go to bed.

Creativity can be fueled by other creativity.(hmmmm I like that!
That's going on my sig :sunglasse ). Thoughts can also fuel creativity (like say you notice you get a different mood every time the weather changes, -that's worth an article explaining it!)

Just something I noticed....I'm more of an artist, but, I write stuff too (and photograph...). I do all three. :)
