What would happen if i backcomb just an inch at the root of each dread after sectioning, then going neglect from there? Would the individual dreads form up if you just keep ripping them when they knot with other sections? Or would the roots most likely just get untangled?

i think thats a cool idea and would probably work. when i started mine, i backcombed but they fell out right away and i was left with an inch or so of root. it was enough to keep them separated and the rest eventually dreaded on its own. i did have to do quite a bit of ripping, but everyone does.

i'd vote that after you do them, you wool rub them. that might help them stay together at such a short length.
