Beforehand, i know i am not a doctor and i have no right trying to explain my theory, but i thought i would anyway. Why do all doctors assume depression is directly connected to serotonin? True, serotonin may be the chemical certain depressed people need, but not all. I have tried numerous SSRI's and they have all just made me more depressed. But, even on a low dose of opiates I feel like the most rational, calm, caring, and responsible person. And i know what some people will say, "The reason you feel normal on opiates is because your addicted and your body needs them", that may be true, but even years before i took an opiate i was always a nervous wreck. Then that one day i had my first 5 mg. percocet, it was love. Its just so sad that the FDA wont even stop to think about developing and opiate based anti-depressant. Because for some people a drug that activates opiate receptors is all they may need. Lets not forget that until the 1950's opiates were used for depression until the introduction of MAOI's, tricyclics. SSRI's are also linked to psychotic episodes in some people and the FDA even put them on a black box for suicide. Yeah, that sounds like a drug really worth taking. Doctors may just need to take into consederation that opiates may be the only thing that work for some people. That is just my two cents.
The problem is that with opiates, the dosage would be increased non stop and eventually they stop working all together. If your 19 you may have not gotten to that point but trust me, it comes. After a few weeks no matter how much opiates you put into your body eventually the euphoric effects, the cause being the serotonin, runs out and you cant get it back for a few days. Can you imagine what a suicidal person would do in that state? Because Im a fairly mentaly sound human being who has been pushed to near insanity by morphine addiction. Not to mention the long term damage you can cause to endorphin generation, serotonin production, and the bodily destruction caused by 24/7 constipation. You ever wonder why people doing yoga bend so much? It' because when shit isnt excreted from your body in a noral time frame, it enters your blood stream and is actually the cause of much mental/physical problems. I love your idea and believe that opiates should be completley legal, no perscription, for obvious reasons. But trying to convince doctors that opiate use to battle depression at all (either long term or short term, bot will cause addiction) is just not going to happen. Doctors dont like giving them out as it is! Namaste
