If you take a look into the future, it might be possible that meat will not be produced out of animals any more, due to reasons of efficiency, ecology and world hunger, but also very important, animal rights or health. It might be produced directly from cells, using tissue engineering methods. The result is called "cultured meat" or "in vitro meat". Improved vegetarian meat might be another option for the future. See http://www.futurefood.org.
this is definately a great idea... meat without murder, I'd totally go for that! Meat would also probably be cheaper because it would be so easy to produce.
what'd be the point of those animals then. i can understand if they sent this crap to places without meat/food. it sounds disgusting though...
That'd be quality. Any idea how close we are to that? I wanna cultured pork pie. Damn I miss those things.
all the chickens that are raised now in farms for their eggs and meat would become useless, why would anybody raise chickens, or pigs, or cows, farmers would be screwed. if you can grow eggs, milk, or meat, they wouldnt serve a purpose. their numbers/population wouldnt be as they are now, because no one would give a shit about a damn chicken. and i dont know where they would go, were eating up the planet, would they just chill in the streets. animals die/get killed by other animals... its nature to kill and eat... just as the same is with killing vegetables. for an example, there was a law put out for no more horses to be sent to slaughter houses for meat. the results these horses are left out to starve to death or their just being abandoned somewhere, because them jackasses dont know what to do with them, it takes alot of money to feed em, and land for them to roam. domesticated animals are a luxury, usually people dont keep animals that are useless. only in our society can we afford to have them as pets. what do u suggest we do with those millions of animals that were now using for food?
Well, they'd be slaughtered for meat, which would be what would happen to them anyway. Then they'd be stable amounts conditioned then released into the wild. Farmers could change to growing food crops, we'd solve a lot of world poverty (breeding animals for food is a hell of a lot more inneficient than growing crops for food)
to Hesh, I'd imagine it'd be like cats and dogs now, where we try to keep the population under control through reproductive alterations... there was an animal shelter where i used to live that had horses there. They never killed an animal and had many severely handicapped ones, but they had them all neudered or spayed. the thought of in vitro meat does not appeal to me at all...
farmers in the midwest right now are growing corn like crazy. as a result lands that were preserved for conservation are now being plowed. the increase in the use of pesticides and fertilizer are threatening to kill the gulf of mexico. the dead zone due to nitrates being leaked in the ocean from farming is growing, thx to growing more crops. Then they'd be stable amounts conditioned then released into the wild. they're domesticated animals who depend on men for their food, where do you think we'll release them? agriculture means less wild areas not more. farmers from kansas to texas are irrigating crops, pumping water from the oglala water table which in the next century will be dry. then what water are they gonna use for crops... the main reason why they're burning the amazon forest is for agricultural purposes. killing in the process millions of animals, and non-edible plants which might have other uses like medicinal uses. and not just animals but peoples and their way of life. war started when man became farmers.
The destruction of the rainforest is for cattle farming mostly, and palm oil, rather than food crops. I said conditioned, rather than just released. Admittedly, crop growing isn't perfect, but my point is that a lot of food crops are grown solely for animal feed. I'm not advocating pesticide use, but animal farming pollutes a lot as well, it's one of the biggest greenhouse gas causes because of the amount of methane that it gives off (and methane is a worse greenhouse gas than C02 to boot)
we can use that methane, rather than using coal, oil, petrol, diesel. methane is a natural gas it can be used as a fuel for vehicles, and is claimed to be more environmentally friendly than alternatives such as gasoline/petrol and diesel. in some villages in India this is how they have electricity. they use the manure to produce methane that they burn in small powerplants. cows in India are sacred. methane's relative abundance and clean burning process makes it a very attractive fuel... one of the main reasons for destruction of the amazon forest besides timber is cashcrops.
It's not just the harvestable manure that gives it off though, cows fart a lot too. I'm not saying there should be more crop farming, I'm saying farmers should replace the land they are using to grow animal feed with food-crops. Then there'd be plenty left over to allow nature to take over again. Human waste can still be used as fuel too.
i find it funny the thought of an animals farts are melting the polar ice caps. u know how many cars are on earth. how many factories pump shit into the atmosphere... etc. did u know they say that termites could a major cause aswell because of their diet and digestive processes, they produce as much methane as the human industry. and studies show that most methane produced by cows and sheep emerges from the mouth (burp) rather a fart. the u.s. is releasing roughly 2 billion pounds of carbon into the atmosphere each day, by burning gasoline. consuming about 146 billion gallons a year. and thats just the u.s. alone. either way were doing way more damage than any animal.
gee, i don't know... maybe have a CHANCE at least living, or being owned as pets. you don't even want to give them a chance.
whats a cow gonna do... other than graze on the grass all day, ruining someones land. my uncles got chickens, he lets 'em run around freely on the land, they stick around the coop because thats where they get fed and have protection. he gets eggs from them, and sells them. where would u put them cows... seriously i don't think alot of people would want cows as pets. unless everyone was self sufficient! but even then they'd just be breeding them and raising them for food. theres fences everywhere, i don't own cows so i really don't care, give'm a chance... but u know its never gonna happen, unless money is useless in the future. when u look at it, it all comes down to money, just like everything else.
Yeah fair point, but the methane given off by the average cow in it's lifetime is more than that of an average SUV (land rover not Hummer or anything), obviously that include the harvestable, but that's only happening in developing countries really. This wouldn't completely replace meat at any rate hehe, it says that it'd be a long time before they could produce anything complicated enough for even a steak. It'd be all processed meat like sausages, pork pies/scotch eggs, nuggets ect. You're right on the money point yeah.
