Perhaps our government should stop spending billions of dollars interfering with other nations and spend some of that money at home.

Do not worry I have no doubt the US government will keep on taxing the producers to give out handouts for people who cannot take care of themselves.

All redistribution of wealth does is make the wealthy move there money where the government cannot get it.

The middle class will pay for all the wars and the expanding socialist state.

People want to be taken care of from birth to death without doing it themselves. Meanwhile they loose their freedom.

Does not bother me. I walk away.

Redistribution of wealth is a fundamentally good idea. If the wealthy shift their money around or flee to escape taxes, that can be penalized fisically.

I don't want handouts. I want opportunities. People can live in oppulance and that's fine, but they should pay a find to take care of the people who need food and shelter. If you consider basic humanity a handout, then I don't think you truly understand the nature of poverty and how it affects people. No matter what by the bootstaps story you have to tell.

Opportunities are created. As far as poverty, I bet I understand it more than you. Try 4 years on the streets.

I know what it is like to be hungry. I know what it is like to be looked down upon by the rest of the world. I have seen violence, discrimination, and downright evil.

Was it the government that got me beyond where I was. No it was me and the compassion of some truly remarkable people who saw me as someone more than a homeless person. It also took me taking personal responsibility for my life.

But I think I understand as much as anybody what struggle is like. I also understand how the government screws up everything it touches.

So before you judge me perhaps you might realize I have something wonderful to say to people. The answers are in you and not the government.

I have amazing compassion for people struggling becase I have been there.

It is okay to have a difference of opinion with me. But do not tell me that I have not been there.

Okay, so you've been through rough times. That give you some street cred.

I still don't think that means that saying all social saftey nets are bad because of a vauge, 'the government screws up everything' stance is the best position.

What about the Post Office? The government does that great. Ultimatly, it is up to people to improve their stock in life, I don't argue with that.

I just feel that the more ways we have to give the poor, the tired, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the reched refuse of your teeming shore...

The more chances we give them to move up, the more likely it is they will.

I suppose where we differ...and it is okay to differ..is the aspect of government responsibility versus our responsibility as humans.

I believe it is up to us as individuals to help others. The Constitution has nothing to say about government being obligated to help anyone.

But we do agree that something needs to be done. I am not sure the government is up to the task.

I have lost all faith in our government. I have made a good life for myself. I earn more than I will ever be able to spend....

I suppose what I am saying is I can do more good with my money helping others than some government program that has lofty ideas and lazy bureaucrats sitting on their assess.

Perhaps I am just to jaded to believe that the government can do anything good. Well despite that, I know I can.

I hope it is people like you who end up running things. My generation and the previous generations have really screwed things up.

Well I was exagerating with the amount 1/4 tax for the affleunt.

I would say that I feel, that it is our responsibility, in what should be the best country on earth, to create a society where people are rewarded for their merits, and everybody has an oppurtunity to be fed, and where nobody, and I mean nobody ever has to go hungry, or can't afford an education when their willing to work hard.

Of course, I realise the loftiness of the goals I'm speaking of. However, I don't think anything can be accomplished through apathy.

Whilst I do agree that our government, in it's present form, does screw up even the most noble of goals. Washingtons a place good ideas go to die.

And the constitution doesn't say that we should accomplish these kinds of things. They aren't constitutionally mandated roles for the government. Neither is creating a space program. Whilst the constitution is a very important document, I don't feel it can entirely address all the needs of a 21st century society.

    All the best unknown.

i've stolen food from my places of employment due to being hungry at the time and/or low on funds, but never because i was starving.

i go broke a lot though because i'm not good with my money. so i try and stock up on staples like dried beans and rice, because if i'm ever really broke and need to get by for a few days on next to nothing, beans and rice is more than edible, and nutritious enough to get by on.

but i'm lucky. i know many people who have been far worse off than me in many cases.
