Hi guys, i've been wanting dreads for a few years now, and i was speaking to my new housemates girl friend who said she could dread hair, so i thought cool, i'll ask her to do it!!! I'd spent a longtime reading up about dreads and told i wanted to use the backcombing method, and she said thats what she did. So this evening we started them and i feel like she ruined my hair, she sectioned the hair then started backcombing, and adding wax after she had backcombed, problem is that i wasn't really paying attention to what she was doing, and now she has finished, i think what the crap has she done!!!! It feels like my hair is caked in wax and to look at they don't look like dreads but rather sticky matted spikes. I've only just come across this forum and its the first time i've come across the no wax idea, as other people i've met over the years said that yeah use a little wax. So what to do, honestly i feel like going and washing my hair as soon as possible but shes here tonight and can't do it straight away. Then seeing what i have left and then see if i need someone else to lend a hand. I had hoped that id have a selection of backcombed sections which had a tiny bit of wax in, that with a bit of patience and time would start to lock up, but now i just feel pissed off!!! Has anyone else had a similar experience and what did you do?!!! Thanks Alex
i would just comb them out and wash your hair a lot, then start again. its not difficult to backcomb yourself and i think it might be easier or at least safer to redo the whole thing. you dont want to have a bunch of residual wax stuck in the middle of them forever.
u can try washin it out but its not easuy, it takes a really long time n lotsa scrubbing and very very hot water hot as u can safely handle they'll most likeky come out with the agressive scrubbing anyway so maybe u should comb n starty over couldnt hurt to scrub comb scrob melt comb srcrub melt scrape pick comb scrub melt scrub scrub scrub scrub scrape n pick some more (hopefully wont be that bad, cant see what u mean by caked) but it'll be some work
I heard dish soap gets wax out. Is this true? I could NEVER get wax out when I was a little punk rocker. got all over my pillow... clogged my pores... sucked.
I'm with WANDERIN BLUES on this one. No matter how hot the water is and how hard you scrub your not gunna get ALL of it out. None of this would have happened if you were paying attention. Punch you housemates girlfriend in the gut.
it's not nice to hit girls. or boys. just comb them out man... wash your hair really well, with very hot water, a few times, and once it's gone then you can back comb again if you like. if you don't want to comb out you can try boiling them, but it's not exactly easy. or safe. although rather exciting... anyway, good luck
just comb out, do the amazing cleanse, and start over. so sorry you had this horrible experience, but if you don't fix it now, you will regret it. ok, so i copied this from a myspace dreadhead group, i've never actually tried it, but everyone seems to swear by it. ****** wanna get all of the oil, gunk, wax, and other thing out of your dreads that may have possibly built up from not enough care? this concoction below has been said by tons of people i know, and soooo many others online, to work better than any kind of commercial dreadlock shampoo or rinse! So here we go: This works sooo good~ and most of you probably have all the stuff available right now so try it out !~ ---------- (Read all of this before trying it out!) ----------- Get a BIG bowl of warm water, mix in about 3/4 cup of baking soda, 8-9 drops of tea tree oil, 2 Tsp of lemon juice, and 2Tsp of salt, and stir until well dissolved. use a squirt bottle or something to apply to your scalp and soak all your dreads real well ~ wrap up in a towel, shower, cap, or plastic baggie, and let them sit for like 1/2 an hour or so ~ then rinse( and rinse again ). When you rinse your hair the water will probably be muddy brown...getting all dirt/smoke/gunk out....and it deep cleans the middle of the dread! I'd do this about maybe once a month or so....its really worth it! It will leave you just a pure head of dreads and nothing else inside, and helps them knot up faster and stay knotted, with no grease! But you still should shampoo often, even if you do this treatment. ************ good luck to you... and yeah... do the backcombing yourself. i did mine, it wasn't hard, and it was really worthwhile to know that my dreads are mine and mine alone, and my head of hair and i had a really spiritual experience going through it. oh... and make sure you have a mirror you can sit in front of. i stood in front of the bathroom mirror for 12 hours the day i did it. aghhhh!
^^that recipe was taken right from the knotty know-how forum, as far as I can tell. it's posted somewhere in the archives under deep-cleaning concoction. it's brilliant...
^edit.... lol, i just was re-reading the myspace thread where i found this recipe... and it said this recipe came from hipforums originally lol!! so things come full circle.
Thanks for all the replies, i think i've got a really tough job ahead of me, and that the wax is going to take ages to get out, wish i'd had the guts to say stop, but i was a little worried it'd upset her. Oh boy, not the best start to my dready journey oh well, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger!!!! Will let you all know how i get on!!! (
you didnt have the guts to say stop cause u might upset her? you shouldnt have let her start unless u knew exactly what she would do so you wouldnt be this upset we all know that knotty know how is the best source of info on dreads and that the most popular sources knottyboy and dreadhq have probly ruined more dread journies then they helped..but i really wish there was a way to easily get knotty know how to become the most popular, the 1st choice in info sources so peoplke wouldnt so often look to commjercial sites selling useless and harmful products for info its really hurting dread culture more then helping especialy since i'd imagine most peopkle who use the most popular info sources have incredibly frustrating and discouyraging 1st experiences with dreading someone needs to make a dread info site with links to knotty know how warning of the dangers of those sites...one that knocks them out of the top possitions in search results
to be honest sites like knotty boy are the cause of all this, at the end of the day, i've not done anything like dreads before and the fact she said she'd said she had dreaded a few peoples hair before, helped with be putting my trust in her. Well i've washed my hair like 5 times already this morning and have got almost no where with removing the wax, was just wondering if there is anything that will dissolve the wax, as at the moment about the only way i can see myself removing it is to cut my hair off, pour boiling water on my head and comb like mad. Only joking i wouldn't but i wish there was an easy way to do it. So then if i manage to get this mess out of my hair, what is the best thing to do, backcomb and just leave them for a couple of weeks before washing then letting them do there thing!!!
try the recipe, try dishwashing soap, buy a bunch of crappy towels from a discount store and rub the wax out, then throw them out.
try orange oil its the main ingredient in products like dissolve it the pure orange esential oil will disolve even tar and glue but do a test 1st to make sure it doesnt dissolve hair as well i dont think it will, but best to test nevr tried it, but seems it should work...if u try it ajnd it does post results
it is, compleely natural and safe years ago used to do like, after a house is finnished being built or getting construction done we'd go in to clean the mess left behind, we'd use oraqnge oil to disolve adhesives caulks, tars, lots of gunk splattered on the floors id guess the best way to try it after u make sure it wont dissolve the hair is work it into a single dread keep just workin it thru like 5 min or so allowin it to dissolve n soften the wax..then wash it thoroughly if it helps at all on that 1 dread then do em all..a few times till its all gone wondr why noboy ever sues those sites
I gotta get me some of that. We dreadheads don't sue. OR DO WE????? They make money off of peoples' lazy ignorance. It's a damn shame.
