Is there any way possible to get rid of raspberry bushes. I used to have some now I have half a yard full and no matter how manny of them I dig out there always seems to be more. Is it even possible to get rid of them?
You wanna get rid of them?! I would love to have an abundance of raspberry bushes. Ah but I do have other types of plants that have taken over...it can be a real bother. People tell me to pour gasoline over the plants, but I don't want to do that...not sure of any other ways to kill them out. Sorry I can't be of more help..maybe someone else knows the answer.
Generally I'm agaisnt killing my plants but these things are becoming a hazard in the yard, you can barely walk on that side of the yard without getting some serious scratches. I think gasoline might be a bit extrem and probabbly non to good for the surrounding plants.
They can become a nuisance. They are very prickly, too. Sadly, ours are on our fence, and out next door neighbor uses all kinds of poisons, she accidently killled one of our apple trees while killing off some raspberries bushes. Damn, that womyn must be using Napalm or something. I find that (wearing leather gloves) cutting them very close to the ground, and keep cutting them, helps. They evetually give up. Getting them when they are young, and not really strong helps, too. Also, many just become empty canes the year after they bear fruit, so they are easly to take out. You have to wear protection, though, cuz, like roses (the same plant family as raspberries) they will prickle you.
for starters rasberrys dont grow on bushes they grow on canes and none of the ones in my back yard r prickly. the only way to get rid of them is to dig out the roots and any shoots that have come of the root balls or burn them out then dig good luck.(poor rasberrys they make good smoothies with vodka):H
The canes are too thick and tough for the weed wacker, much less the hedge trimmer. If you get them before they get woody, if may work. You could dig them out, but they will prickle you, and it is much work, if you have a lot of land. I still find cutting them back is the best way. I use a garden clipper, or a long arm snipper. Felco is the top of the line, for afforable clippers. But if something else works for you.......that's cool. (Wacker, woody gardening is so sensual. )
I suggest carpet mulching. You can quite literaly use old carpet. Carboard works too. Something thick and tough that plants aren't going to be able to reach through. Leave it there for a month. Two to be safe. Everything green under it will be dead.
Carpet mulching would be great (OMG, David, when I first read this, my mind must have been in the gutter because I thought you wrote something else. ) In fact, I wanted to do this in our garden, because of all the thisle, I can't find any damn carpet pieces. I'll have to look harder.
Maggie, go get a cold shower. and perhaps collaring with copper flashing. usually roots die from contact with copper.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly. Perhaps she'll die. I wouldn't suggest munching on the spot. As you said, rasperry is spiny.
i have a pretty big spread of blackberries that id like to get rid of (its the only bit of yard i have). ill have to try carpet mulching. ill need a lot though lol.
lol gardener, iv actually thought of somehow finding some goats to do the job for me... but that would just end in disaster haha
My mom finally managed to kill off an established stand of rasberries after mowing them to the ground one spring, digging up the roots, and building a mulch bin over where they'd been. They are AWFUL to try to get rid of! love, mom
