In 1971, when I was fifteen, I became a hippie. In the Spring of that year it was anounced in the hip press that Copenhagen was the place to be that Summer (after Amsterdam in 1970). So I hitchhiked, all by myself, from square The Hague in Holland to wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen in Denmark, where I spent six weeks or two months in a sort of sleep-in called Green Camp (see photo).

(This was just before famous Christiania opened in the Fall of 1971.)

People often stayed in Green Camp day and night, and seldom went out to downtown Copenhagen, a few miles away. It was a hippy community in its own right, with hippies from all over the world (though mainly from Europa and the United States) who greeted each other with words as “Love Brother” or “Peace Sister”. It consisted of large army tents that slept maybe thirty people, on matresses on the floor. Everywhere groups formed that were passing around a chillum or making music (bongo’s and guitar and singing).

I managed to build up a hippy life there; I had many friends, got a job in the shop/canteen which earned me food and some coins to buy some hash. That was all that I needed, and I did not go home, where my school had begun.

Is there any one who spent time in Copenhagen in 1971 and recognizes the place? Any one who likes to share stories and pictures?
