I have been wanting dreads for a while now and last wednesday I went to get my hair dreaded at the salon my aunt works at. I had assumed that the only way was to back comb them and I was under the assumption that's what would be done (I still wish that had happened). So when I went there wednesday I was disapointed that the lady there was using what seems to be (after extensive research) the twist and pin method (she sectioned it, twisted it, put those thingies on the end to hold it, than put me in the dryer). She told me to sleep in a du-rag which I have been doing, and she also said to put more bees wax in it and twist them frequently. Well there's a few issues. First off will my hair type even dread or lock (I don't know the difference)? This is what my hair looked like before I dreaded it. [IMG]
    it's thick and curly.
Now one person at the salon said my hair will never lock, and honestly I don't know if it will. The first day with my dreads they looked like this
    [IMG]
however from recomondation online and from the person that did them I put more wax in them and twisted them which may have in turn made them worse
    [IMG]
I also was told not to wash my hair until it locks, which was said to be 2-4 weeks. However I researched and It said I should wash it. So will washing my hair ruin them or make them take longer or make them quicker? (i've heard mixed answers throguh research). Is there anything I should know about my maintaining my dreads? Should I stop waxing them? Is it bad if the tips get really loose and it spans out like a palm tree. Is it bad if they are very loose, or will they need to be very tight? Is it just worth it to have the sections backcombed (however this is only if theres no way these are going to dread). Thanks for any help, most advice about dreads seems to be mixed and also I don't know what applies to my hair type. Oh one last question, if it does lock or dread or whatever how long will that take? also when would I know. Thanks again, feel free to ask me anything if you want.

    oh god.

man get that wax out of your hair.

    your hair will lock
but not with wax in it.
    salons always fuck it up.

    step 1
    get wax out
    step 2
let it grow, don't brush. wash once every 2 weeks.

    step 3 play with it

    step 4 wait

    step 5 wait

step 6 GET ALL THE WAX OUT

    step 7 play with it

    step 8 wait

keep doing this for months and you'll have dreads

BUT GET THAT WAX OUT NOW

:stunned: DUUUDE! I hope u didn't pay for those. With your extensive reasearch didn't you come accross the WAX IS BAD part. Thick curly hair knotts up the best (with the exception of nappy hair) IMO. You should have went all natural man. If i were you i would wash all that sh!t in my hair out and let mother nature dread me up. But that just MY 2 cents.
Anyone wanna back me up here? Now the time to chime in.

a couple months of hot ass water, orange essential oil (maybe, try dishwashing soap)
and LOTS of rubbing with a towel.
You might have to go thru hell towels.

wax is the destroyer of dread lock

    I'm sorry man :[

    start over? u havent started
wax will never result in dreads
    it all must come out
u need clean hair to dread
(i recomend washoing every week, but i get lazy too)

dr bronners and very hot water to get the wax out, scrubb like crazy
when your hairs nice n clean just shake it out after u wash it n let it do its thing

over the 1st few weeks feel around for clumps forming and seperate them from eachother..twist or play with em if u feel like it
    give it time
if u really feel the need to backcomb then go for it..but dont do anythijg else..no wax no wax no wax ever

salon and dreads should never be used in the same sentence

    Salons ruin dreads?

    :p

    To the Original Poster:

Well dude, as you have heard from everyone else's comments, wax is bad.
It cannot be stressed enough, especially due to the fact of how much of that crap you put in your beautiful hair. WAX IS EVIL!

Whoever told you your hair won't lock is ignorant. Which doesn't suprise me because the statement made, came from somebody in a Dreadlock Salon.
Wash all that crap out with INTENSE hot water.

It'll take a few, but you'll get there. After you get that done, simply don't brush your hair and don't condition it. Wash once every 2 weeks - month, and you'll have dreads. If Patience isn't your strong suit, lucky you, Dreadlocks teach the virtue of Patience. ( Naturally atleast)

If you REALLY can't stand it, then wash all that crap out and then backcomb. Just with no wax this time.

There is no difference in when the hair dreads or locks, it's just a play on words.

Best of luck to you brotha!

    Namaste, John.

    theres only 1 method
theres some steps that can be added or deleted but dont matter

    neglect------->dreads

    backcomb---->fall apart---neglect--->dreads

    or the hellish
baccomb--wax--->cry-->wash wash wash wash wash wash fall apart ---neglect--dreads
    or

baccomb--wax--->cry-->wash wash wash wash wash wash fall apart -backcomb---fall apart--neglect--dreads

im lazy the 1 step method seemed easiest to me

    luckily also patient

with your curly ass hair, the neglect method should work pretty quick for you.

i am so sorry you went to a salon and some idiot told you your hair wouldn't lock, and put tons of shit in it. it's true, it won't lock with all that wax in it though!

your hair will lock like crazy! (and fyi locking=dreading... hence dreadlock)

do a search on hipforums for the dread cleaning thing, it's got bakind soda and stuff in it... use super hot water, vinegar might help too. basically anything to get all that grease out of your hair!

then you can start over. use residue free shampoo (dr. bronner's works, or suave daily clarifying) and NO conditioner.

then you have the choice of method. i love your method breakdown soaringeagle... made me laugh my ass off!

with your curly hair, it shouldn't take long for the neglect method to actually look like dreads. i personally liked the backcombing method for myself, but that's just me, everyone's different.

whatever you do, never put wax in your hair again! good luck man... oh, and research on dreadlocks... the best place to learn lots is in these forums. the myspace dreadlock groups are okay too. don't trust "research" from places that sell products. cavemen didn't have products but their locks looked great! just remember to wash every once in a while and don't worry too much about them, and you'll be great!

did you get the wax out? cause backcombing's not gonna do shit if you haven't gotten the wax out. from the picture, it doesn't look like you got it out...

    Sigh..........

    Dude.

Cut all of your hair off right now. Seriously.
It's not very long and you'll grow it back in no time. In the mean time you'll have the proper knowledge base about Dreads and how to grow them. This way, you can choose to Backcomb or Neglect, and won't worry about the wax.

Best advice I can give you.

    Namaste, John.

well i'll guess you have to now that you've done it lol.... but the amount of washing you have to do to get all that gunk out, you're not going to have any backcombed anything left, so you'll pretty much be back at step one.

it seems like you're awfully impatient about getting them to look like dreads right now. keep in mind... your hair is going to look like SHIT for a couple of months. if you don't get the wax out immediately, it's going to look like GREASY SHIT, and it won't lock.

wash it out. wash wash wash until you can't feel any more greasy waxy shit. i put wax in 4 of my dreads when i was doing them, and i had to wash them out immediately... it was horrible and i realized it would be bad for them. it took FOREVER to wash it out and i had to rebackcomb those dreads, because the knots came undone while washing. so yeah... the waxed hair you backcombed, you just wasted your time.

do it right, in the right order, and dreads are easy. go out of order or use wax, and dreads become a huge headache.
