Shorter the better in my opinion.

If you're going to get them, make it ASAP.

shorter the better? my hair is currently 7-8cm in the back to around 15cm on top/in front. I've been thinking I'd grow my hair for another three months to get a little more length. but maybe I should just get started a little sooner? what would you say is the minimum length you need?

I started mine when my bangs were down past my nose near my lip.
It's been 9 months and my dreads have barely grown,
    they've just grown in fatness.

hm.. I can pull my bangs down to cover my eyes entirely. I'm going traveling in 3 months, and I'd like to have it knotted by then. is that a little too ambitious? I'd prefer minimum maintenance while I'm on the road, so I guess I'd rather not knot them right before I go..

well when you're on the road, just section off a piece and start splitting/twisting it/playing with it.
    That's what I did.
You choose whichever method you feel is right for you.
I just played with my dreads for months whenever I didn't have anything to do.

what do you mean? knot it up, then whenever I got nothin to do, just twist and play with em? how long should I estimate to get the actual knotting done? I think I'm going to find a guide for beginners on this. hehe. thanks man

this is the ultimate guide, right here.
    knotting takes a while.
you just play with your hair.
    and wait.

My hair was past my waist and my dreads have ended up barely shoulder length. The moral of this story is don't wait to grow your hair if you want long dreads because they may shrink on you anyway. I think it's definitely better to just let em get started at a shorter length and then watch them grow from there.

    Looking to be maintenance free?

Neglect is the way to go.

Just don't comb nor condition your hair and you'll have dreads in a year. Wash once every 2 weeks - month. Maintenance free, and 100% Natural.

Yeah man go natural. That way it's not just a fashion statement. Depending on what you want
