i just read something horrible in another thread, both knottyboy and dreadheadhq are not only advocating wax for new dreads but for mature dreads as well its traumativc enough having to start over in the 1st few months of dreading, or in the worse case scenario having to cut them off after a year and start over but its absolutely criminal to even suggest using such harmful products in dreads that are mature i'm inviting everyone whos ever had wax in theyre hair to share theyre stories here and hopefuly save a few new dreads from making such huge mistakes in the future theres been talk lately in other threads about making a vidio or website to combat this trend of everyone looking to these 2 sites as the main sourse of info, sites whos only purpose is to sell products, and tailor theyre info provided to make it seem like the most harmful products are indespecable in the dreading process i know almost every wax story will be a horror story, but if anyone actualy believes wax aided in theyre dread process i'd welcome your input as well if you used wax, how long did your dreads survive before having to cut or start over..if they survived years did you have mould and dirt issues would you ever suggest wax use to others do you think the owners of those 2 companies even have dreads? or are purely proffit motivated as this thread grows wecan print it out in its entirety, and send it to those companies as a petition to remove wax from theyre products they sell as well as removing all suggestions of its use from vidios and dreading instructions pages if they dont respond, it can be posted to every other dread forum and blog we can find please share your stories (ps... we all have our OPINIONS on wax being bad, this thread is meant only for those who have actualy used it and survived it (or didnt) so if you havent used it yourself, please dont bother commenting) think of this as your voice, your chance to tell them what you think of theyre products, but not only them, the world and be assured you will be heard
The crazy thing is is every sight ive came across, except this one advocates using dread wax.... go to google and search dreadlocks. http://www.dreadlocks.com/ http://www.howtodread.com/ http://www.dreadlocks.us/ all these and more suggest dread wax. I was about to buy some untill i randomly ran across this forum and started reading. Im finding how little real information on dreads on the net interesting. My thought is maybe these companies put these sights up, as they suggest very specific products.
My Story:I used wax once( some knotty boy, some dreadhead hq)... that was upon creating them and they stuck out like i had been electrocuted, i didn't like that they felt waxy, but up until then i was ignorant. after that every wash i used extremely hot water... this was before i came here. after coming here i decided that i had made the correct choice for me. I believe that all of the wax is out, but i am sure there is still some lurking... but as long as it doesn't cause any problems i am ok with that. (14 months later) Matt's Story: my boyfriend used wax for the first 3 month's that he had his dreads, fairly regularly (knotty boy) and i actually helped him apply it a few times. his dreads are amazing 3.5 years later, no repercussions for him... we were both lucky that we didn't over wax (even though some people believe any is over waxing) personally i think over waxing is when it causes problems. used in moderation i think it can be ok, though totally unnecessary.
ill tell my personal story. becuase english is not my native language, and because im druk right now i hopw u still follow, even with misspellings. i got my locks almost 1 year ago (11 months and 15 dys). i went to someafro sallon. haircuts like this is not common in norway, nad no friends that i rally trusted knew how to do it, si i want to this african girl at a sallon. she backcombet it really well, and she was good at that. after that she melted some wax, and put it into my hair. at the time i had never heard of these forums, and didnt know better. so expected her to know what she was doing, and trusted her. the next day i discovered these forums. after reading a bit i trusted forums more then the girl that backcombed me, and dacided to throw the wax she sold me into the trash. for a long while i was making an effort to get most of the wax out, and it worked to some degree. i got most of the wax out. and started to palmroll. after some weeks of palmrolling i figured that just stuck my loose hairs into the leftover wax instead of dreading it.... so i just decided to dont give a fuck about my hair. i practice capoeira, twice each week, 2 days in a row, so always wash after that 2nd practice. with ive noticed is that for each time i wash, some wax disapears, and those areas that dont have wax dread and knot really well, quiten quickly, even tough i have really straight hair, no curls whatsoever. the frizzes gets crazy sometimes tough, but over time the frizzes just go into mu locks and stays. just to make it short, the areas that gets wax-free over time with washing, drads quite quickly, even with my straight hair. but some of my lock, that probably got soaked with wax to well at the sallon, stays like candles with hair in it. just trust me ojn this, after 1 year with wax in my hair. it is not the best way. u get something that looks like locks quite quickly, but veryone that knows anything about it knew u screwed up. and over time the locking process goes a lot slower. hope u could bear with me, even with my bad english, end drunk typing. this is my storry
by the way i dont mold at all, i just dont dread very well.. might be the colt norwegian weather. i can barely survive myself, how can small bugs survive then?
i used it on my first set, but only a little tiny bit applied to the outside of the dread, after i had backcombed. i reapplied every month or so, but only a little bit and my dreads were fine. i just didnt put enough in to do any harm. when i look at my old dreads, they are clean and smell nice, even inside. i dont think that wax has to be so evil and cause so many problems, its just unnecessary. and i do think its wrong when those people who sell wax reccomend saturating the whole dread with the stuff, and putting it inside as you backcomb. thats when shit gets fucked up. i had one dread that a friend did and she caked it full of wax. that one felt disgusting and looked like shit and never locked up at all. i ended up combing it out and redoing it. as for using it on mature dreads, i think that using a tiny bit (like rice grain size) on each dread would be an effective way of conditioning them if you have dry hair, but obviously too much would ruin them.
just emailed the 1st of those sites saying how dare they recomend wax and dread "products" email came back undeliverable i wouldnt doubt though that dreadheadhq and knottyboy got an affiliate program and pay for clickthroughs
yea its like i thought, if u click dreadpoints on dreadheadhq ya see its an affiliate thing, i bet that dreadlocks.com email is dead cause the site was made by someomne wanting free or cheap dread products then realized 1st hand they were advertising junk just to get junk and closed the email im sure theres a ton of sites like that
I used wax once and only once. I have heard alot of bad things about it but I have yet to see any bad effects on my hair. If anything it does make it harder for them to lock up. but other than that as long as you dont over-do it they should be fine. I will probably never put wax in my hair again as the neglect method works just fine.
Well hears my story: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=289534 It took me about 2 days of washing my hair about 10 times a day and using a lots of different concontions to get all the wax out, in the end vegetable oil was what got it all out. I also brushed and combed in lots to get it out as well. So all i can say is that if that is what it took to remove it from my hair, and its know back to um backcombed hair, you guys with dreads are probably never going to remove it fully from your hair. I really wish that someone could stop places like knottyboy and dreadhq from publishing there rubbish, because it'll never result in proper dreads!!!! Hopefully now i can start on my dready adventure with the amazing knowledge i've gained from this site!!! Thanks to all you knowlegable dreadheads. Peace x
I used wax for the first two weeks until reading all the advice on this board.... I hated the texture, the stickiness.. it was nasty. I managed to to wash it all out and my dreads are back to being soft, fluffy little babies - wax free - the way it should be!!
mmm. tough call this. my first set of dreads i didn't wax, then was recommended (by a dready) to wax them using dax wax, this stuff is vicious and can only be washed out with washing up liquid. as soon as i did it i regretted it as they went all gunky and gross. luckily (if you look at it that way!) my ex girlfriend cut them out while i was asleep! i had these for 4 months so they never got mature my second set (my current ones, 7 months or so) i didn't wax. occasionally i put in a bit of dreadheadhq wax just to defrizz if i go somewhere a bit smarter and before i go swimming in a pool as it helps them hold together better and stay knotted up. also i do alot of work on cars and if i use wax i get lots of gross stuff stuck in my hair!! where as with no wax its just twigs and nails and stuff rather than dust and dirt I'm not for or against wax. but i think using alot often has to be bad as they feel gross!! i think it is not essential but helps for certan situations. i've not really been able to tell te difference of whether they knot up faster or not. also on the talk of products. locing peppa is poop. it feels like its locking up really fast, but in the morning its all undone again. these are obviously my opinion only.
hahaha sorry to laugh but..anytime a dready says "luckily my gf cut em off in my sleep" u just know there was somethin nasty goin on with em but hey, wax may have saved your relationship, cause i'm sure if the dreads wern't a goopy mess ya woiulda tossed her out 1st thing in the morn instead of sayin thanks
The guy that put my dreads in put them in with dax wax. I didn't want him to but he said thats how he did it, so i just let him. I have since then used knottyboy wax about 3 times becuase i was told by everyone i know with dreads i had to otherwise i wouldn't get dreads :S I decided to stop using becuase i hated how it made my dreads feel then i found this site, so far 8 months on i havn't h ad any problems.
everyone u knew with dreads who insisted u needed it otherwise u wouldnt get dreads must not have had dreads long i bet right? i love how they insist you need it to get dreads..if thats the case how do you explain all the homeless with dreads? i guess they eat garbage, but when it comes to hair they'll blow money on wax to get dreads? theres all this talk about dreads being a natural style but then they use unnatural means to create the natural style? makes no sence these ppl advocating wax... do they even believe that dreads are the natural state hair would be in
most of them had had them for about 6-8 months but the persons advice i followed the most was my best friend. Shes had her dreads 3 years and used knottyboy wax every other day for about 7 months...so i figured she knew what she was doing.....
yikes wax every other day for 7 months? and then kept em 3 years? no offence but that sounds pretty nasty do u have any pictures of her would she donate a dread for a lil autopsy? see whats colonized in em? are they really stiff and sticky? does she leave a shiny imprint on her pillow?
it would depend on how much she used and how often she washed her hair. if she only used a tiny bit each time, i can see them being fine.
Actually her dreads seem fine from the outside. Don't know what is going off on the inside, I'll ask her if she will donate one although I doubt she will. Next time i see her ill get a picture of the back of her head, so you can see that from the outside the really look like nice dreads, you wouldn't look at them and think urgh she used a lot of wax. I don't think she washes them to often now though. Maybe she was lucky.
