Even though i've identified myself as an athiest since the age of twelve, i sometimes go to church services and other religious activities. I did this mainly as a way of spending time with my family, as well as a need to see and understand how people view the world differently.
I was wondering if any other athiests on this board have ever gone to religous service of their own free will.

every place i go is "church". some place have a more spiritually special feeling then others. few if any of these are ever structures intended as houses of worship or even structures at all, but certain, places with a kind of special feel to them, out in the wilderness mostly, but other unusual places sometimes too.

Do I go to church on my own accord? No. Have I gone to church because I spent the night at someones house on a Saturday and they forced me to the next day? Yes.

Other than that, only weddings and funerals for me.

I went a couple of times at my Aunt's request, and found her Church to be very narrow minded almost to the point of brainwashing, both politically as well as religiously.

However I do like the pastor, Brother Arrington, who does the eulogies at family funerals when one of my relatives passes on. He seems to be a good guy, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the Church.

I may go back to some Church services for the purposes of making business contacts (thats the way it works in the Appalachians) but otherwise I'll probably avoid the Church thing altogether.

    No.
As a parrent , I sometimes think of the fam joining a Unitarian Universalist church..
just for the whole sense of community and church type atmosphere, but with less of the like fire an brimstone.

but, other than that kind of "church" yea, only weddings and funerals.

the idea that a man can build a house that would contain a god, is itself blasphemously preposterous. not that a god would neccessarily refuse to VISIT one. but the idea that making a ritual place and decorating it with religeous symbols, would make it somehow more precious to an imortal and loving god, then the heart of each soul that loves it, i mean its kind of a nonsequiter.

nothing WRONG with having place for people to get togather to shair and enjoy their beliefs, but nothing prerequisite to any sort of true faith about it either.

I'm not an atheist, but I don't go to church. I know some people who do. I stopped socializing with one of my friends because of religion & that stuff. She went to church regulary, prayed, wore long skirts, shawls & such shit. Besides she liked to drink beer & smoked smtms... I think a great number of people goes to church because of fear. And tradition. They're not necessary kind & nice. She wasn't. We can pray at home as well. What for is that demonstration? Your heart is your temple. I do believe in God, but I don't believe in church.
