well recently i have not been able to post but nvm that. ive been learning guitar HARD for the past month. last week picked up my first ever electric, an Aria stg series 006, with a 12 gauge Kustom amp. i have been practising even more, right now i can play all of the main chords (minors and majors) some bar chords (f/fsharp/b) so i have been busy learning songs :).

atm i can play intro to freebird, intro and chorus to hotel california, every rose has its thorn, around half of white wedding, intro to carry on wayward son, slight bits of metallica and little bits and blobs of other songs.

atm learning intro and hopefully the rest of smells like teen spirit.

im just wondering how long should it take for me to learn a song? since i reckon i pick it up really quick, i mean the intro to teen spirit i could do after like 15min practise < it was just really slow, now just a tiny bit faster but will be like 2 weeks untill i can play it fluently. Most chords from A to G i can change from quete quick, just power chords are tough to switch and not picking the rest of the strings when strumming quick.

and just wondering, since i am 100% self/book/free internet lesson/youtube tought, is this all i need to continue? i mean i want to get tuition, but cant really afford it until i begin working and getting my own cash. so is this like good progress?

i have an acoustic, had it since august last year but played very little untill like 6 weeks ago where i realised i could play well with just the few chords i knew atm. i play for like an 1hr daily now (sometimes 2-3-4hrs), 30min or so just practising what ive learned in my time so far, like 30min learning new stuff + reading and watching vids of how to play certain things, also my friend is learning so on some days we jam together (want to make a band someday).

im really confused whether if i learned this much without tuition, would i really need it, and if i should play more than i do. everyday i wake up and just cant wait to learn something new, i dont know last week esp i didnt want anything but play, no tv/games w/e, just reading guides, listening to music and playing myself. its really excisting when i finally am able to play something ive wanted for years lol.

anyway, if some of you could just answer from your experience or knowledge, i would be greatful.

    thanx
    Green

    EDIT:

thats my baby right here lol:

    Hey My Man!

Congrats seems like you are sticking to it! You are doing the right thing for now build the chops. Eventually, start trying to pick out tunes by ear - first the progression then work on fills. Learning the progression lets you pick out the modes (scale) and gives you the **Oooooo I get it** :)

If you get to the point of wanting to learn theory - nuts and bolts stuff - a competent teacher is worth it but not really needed if you are grasping the theory. But it does help to have another person playing the progression while you are noodling in the "correct" mode to hear and understand. Back in the days before cds and computers I would lay a progression down on cassette and then play it back while soloing - learning the fretboard, timing, etc. You will know when the time comes - either a rut or need for more knowledge.

Best advice is to jam with some others when you get the chance. There is no experience like experience. But for now keep learning the tunes!

good job man. by the sounds of it, it shouldn't take you too long to learn a full song. depends on the song of course, but just start off with an easy one and nothing too complicated.

fuckin right green... i think best advice is to not get stuck on the fact of "when am i gonna learn to play a song" for the simple fact that over time it may frustrate you... just keep fuckin around and learnin the basics... i know i got quite a bit to go before i even think about learning a song... right now im just gettin my right hand to smoothly play 3 finger rolls... my left hand is a little shakey so its gonna take me awhile to get moving from one chord to another... but right now.. rolls are easy my right hand has no problem pickin away... just tryin to remember all the different rolls then i'll learn my chords and put them together... learn some licks.. then go from there...

keep it up man. im completely self taught, no internet lessons teachers or anything. i mean i used tabs, but no instructions really other than to just read the notes and play em back. it just takes time. eventually learning how to play songs is just like if you now learned ok this song is a e b, this song is g a b, etc. i can pick up any metallica song (not always the solo) in about as much time as the song takes to play through. you just get used to it, and as you play more you make up your own style really, and ways to make things work. like muting the other strings during a power chrod, youll find your own way that works. its too awkward to try and learn to do it the exact way someone else does it and forcing yourself to make the same motion. youll get it all soon. the first few months go so fast, the learning curve for playing guitar starts out really really quickly.

^ so dude you need to mute the unused strings and still strum them?

i mean ive been just strumming say the 3 strings, the root and the rest.

but anyway, tabs help me alot too, but lol only like a few weeks i realised why i kept getting it wrong, the tabs are upside down xD i felt so silly hahahaha

but thanx guys for the supporst ;)

I use to say I was self taught, then I thought about it. The chords, the songs, the licks, all came from somewhere. Just learning to play means you're sitting at the feet of the masters. Just remember learn from anyone and everyone and anyway you can.

    We're all pulling for you,

hmmm you seem very geared toward learning to play other songs, but i would suggest also making your own up. learning other songs is a great way to get your playing skill high, but at some point you're going to have to make a decision. if you know the scales, start making up your own guitar solos, along with learning other songs. i also find that while learning a song if i mess up while trying to play it sometimes it will actually sound good, and you've got a new song right there. keep up the playing :)

    Hey Green,

I forgot there used to be a good series of books by Troy Stetina that I used to teach with. The Speed and Lead one had classic riffs that will help with hammers and pulls and some good picking exercises. It also covers palm muting and I believe a little sweep picking (don't worry about that for now though). The Metal Method (Doug Marks) is a decent video set - they might have it on dvd by now. I would look for a torrent for them - they torrent everything :)

well what i usually find myself doing with power cords naturally is muting the other strings, even though i dont wind up hitting them anyways. with my index finger (fret hand) i kind of force it against the string above (lower note) so its muted and rest it on the other strings (higher notes) so even if i do hit them with the pick, they dont vibrate. that way i can be holding a power cord on the a d and g strings and strum down the whole instrument and only hear the power cord. but eventually you just learn to strum the right ones, its all in practice though, its not really like a special technique or anything.

fuck i can play the solo to teen spirit well now, i just cant do the mute right, you know after strumming the first p chord, theres a dowupdownup on all muted strings i believe, if i mute it with my actuall palm, it takes forever to get to the next power chord, and doesnt sound right at all, im guessing you only play a few muted strings :s

    bleh

o for that just rest your fret hand gently on all the strings and strum the entire instrument. not palm mute with your strum hand.

You are doing great so far

Ya its good to know your chords, understand basic music theory
    Memorize the basic intervals: (
2nds/9ths, 3rd for harmonies, 5ths (root,5th,octave is power chord like in smells like teen spirit

try these songs, great for learning guitar

    easy
    Enter sandman, metallica
    Iron man, black sabbath

    medium
Dont fear the reaper, blue oyster cult
    Crazy train, ozzy ozbourn
    Master of puppets, metallica

I really recommend just alternate picking and heavy use of your pinky
Do not get in the habit of downpicking everything,
Use ALTERNATE PICKING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
Do not get in the habit of only using index and middle fingers
Use PINKY AND RING FINGER MUCHO
When you play, TAP YOUR FOOT TO MASTER YOUR TIMING

Try to learn a basic form of sweep picking for a more fluenty way to play guitar
(that is, all alternate picking except changing strings; then follow through with your 'sweep')

^ thanx but but i think sweep picking and music theory is abit further, i just began getting good in power chords, so i still need to practise alot before even getting near the 10+ frets lol.

i have a book i received for christmas by a friend, it covers octaves and all of these terms (i allready know root as in the root of the power chord {e or A string on a certain fret makes a certain power chord} its just the rest thats brain consuming.

when the time comes i will look into it, for now i need to practise. then learn the songs you noted.

thanks alot for the help :)
