I'm getting a little confused. Will my hair end up in locks if I just literally stop brushing, and wash twice a week? No wool rubbing, no wax, no back combing, no beads, no rubber bands, no nothing, just time. Literally leaving it alone, and time. If I use this method, will I end up with thin locks, or medium, or thick? I want to go completely natural and let nature be my entire method. Will this work? I read so much about all these tips, and sea salt sprays, and whatever else, but I thought literally nothing works in the end too. Whats the deal? Just time and two washes per week with Bronners? Will that do it?
That'll do it alright. It might take more or less time depending on your hair type but it'll happen. You might end up with lots of thin locks or one huge lock depending on how your hair feels like growing together. Most likely you'll get a mix of thin, medium and thick locks. Soaring eagle's the dude to ask - his all natural dreads are approaching their 18th birthday, I understand, and are very impressive!
playinjm with em can be part of the natural process, kinda absentmindedly just playing or twistin if ya feel the need..but yea pretyty much just leavge em be and lotta ppl notice the 1st dreads beginnin in a few weeks you'll probly end up with dreads of all sizes cause they just go where they wanna go the only thing that u should do, to make sure u dont end up with jusyt 1 dread iss feel around for hairs that seeem to wanna clump togetrher, and pull em apart from other clumps you'll have loose hairs but they'll eventualy join in on clumps or form theyre own..
yeah that'll pretty much do it it's faster if you have hair that's good for dreading. from my understanding, straight hair takes a longer time. if you don't mess with your hair often your locks will have a bunch of sizes.. oh and after a while you'll feel comfortable washing less than twice a week. i don't really set a schedule and i just wash whenever i feel itchy. good luck =3
I started 1 month ago with about 6 1/2 inches. give or take half inch or so. here is a thread I started a few days ago with a picture of the length it is now. A few weeks? I noticed hair clumping together within a few days. I'm assuming you mean these clumps and not actually locks. LOL. I think I'm doing something wrong if I'm supposed to see my first proper lock in a few weeks. Do you just know when it is the right time to do a little seperating? Right now there is no locking yet, so do not feel the need to seperate anything. All the clumps are more or less seperating themselves, or are not formed to be seperated yet. Anyway, thanks all for your answers. I'll just keep on growing, waiting and washing then.
dont worry so much lol there is no right or wrong way for this to happen. it will just happen. dont be alarmed if you dont have any matting happening yet, its only been like a month. it could take a few before you see anything. just the fact that your hair is sectioning itself off already is great, you have great hair for dreads and your off to a really good start.
Thanks. No, I'm not worried about the absence of matting. I'm aware of how long that will take. I was just wondering if to leave your hair alone, literally, except for washing, would result in locks. I had this sudden worry that it may not unless I aid it along somehow. But I don't want to. I just want to sit and wait and let nature be the ultimate tool.
yup. you literally don't have to do ANYTHING to your hair. Technically you don't even have to wash... but definitely not my cup of tea I did nothing except wash and separate... and the only reason I separated was because I wanted some sort of control over the size.
lemme tell ya a lil story of a dear freinds neglect dreads for a couple months shed been tryin hard to find anyone whod help her start her dreads we went to the co gatherin together and shed asked dozens of ppl to help her start em several saif they would but never got around to it after bein there a couple weeeks or so suddenly one day we realized she had 3 well formed dreads and a bunch more wantin to form..and from there just got more n more and they started to tighten.. she was lookin forward to havin em backcombed in, but they formed on theyre own in the time it took to find someone to help her... patience a month in the woods should get ya off to a great start
