they are all really nag champa. nag champa is a traditional indian fragrance based primarily on sandalwood and the champa flower, shrinivas sugandhalaya's satya sai baba nag champa is NOT the only authentic nag champa, its simply the most common outside of india.

as for shrinivas sugandhalaya's incenses, my favorites (of what i've tried) are super hit and natural, which are both similar to but different from the satya sai baba nag champa.

one of my all time favorite indian incenses is made by asoka trading company, and it's called barath darshan.

you can get a pretty good price on it a few places online, including ktbotanicals (though i haven't ordered it from them yet, i intend to soon)

keep in mind that where i live, it costs a buck for a lousy 8 sticks, and i have to drive way out of my way to get it.

its very nicely scented...more floral than nag champa, and a bit "soapy" in the smell....very fresh, fragrant and lovely all around. probably my favorite indian incense.

i also really like puspa's green mogra, a mogra incense made by puspa perfumery products. it usually can be found in the distinctive hexagonal boxes used by a number of incense companies in india. its bright, fresh, floral, and slightly fruity, but like almost all indian incense quite pungent and strong in aroma, and is best used when you can open up some windows.

when i'm burning incense in cold weather and don't want to open windows up, or when i just want something milder and less in-your-face, i usually burn japanese incense, which is -in general- more refined and subtle than indian incense. it has no wooden core, but is simply a solid stick of fragrant material which is burned in an upright position in special types of holders, or in a container filled with sand or something similar.

nippon kodo has a very nice economy line called morning star, which is kind of hit-and-miss but does have some very nice scents. i prefer the amber (a richer, more incense-y stick) or the green tea (a bit softer, more subtle, and quite unique. bears little resemblence to most indian scents)

    ^morningstar amber, by nippon kodo

many japanese incenses are far more costly than indian incense, especially fine aloeswood incenses. what you get it what you pay for, and there is some exquisite incense out there, though you cannot blindly buy something expensive and expect it to suit your tastes perfectly. before trying something expensive, try a less expensive incense in a similar scent or by the same brand to get a feel for the quality before buying connoisseurs stuff.

there are also some good incenses from a number of other countries, like china, korea, nepal, and tibet (from a "legal" perspective part of china, but its bullshit if you ask me)

you have to keep in mind that while all incense is generally meant to smell nice, its not all made for the same reason. many incenses are meant to have some sort of medicinal value, some is used primarily for various spiritual purposes, some is meant to gently perfume an area...and some is just foul, made to smell very strong, but only vaguely like what scent it says. ALWAYS avoid very cheap incense, and dont expect even some of the "premium" brands to be any good (padmini dhoop is fucking TERRIBLE...worse than the brandless stuff you can get in mass amounts for cheap at headshops...btw, dhoop is an indian incense without a stick, thicker than and shorter than japanese koh...padmini dhoop is very strong, and very nasty, and gave me an awful headache...it was like the worst cheap incense i'd ever burned, doused in a lady's perfume prior to burning)

Super Hit, Padmini Patchouli (very very strong), Om incense by Padmini, and I prefer Goloka Nag Champa to the good ol' blue box. Also I do enjoy the patchouli scent from the morning star line (not as strong as the padmini, but still gets the job done). I love patchouli though, and for me, Padmini is the way to go. It has that strong scent that I find really enjoyable in patchouli. Let's just say that I venture to incense shops quite often.

My favorite scent in frankincense, I have some oil that I burn, and we got a stick incense that is a blend, and has frankincense in it, "sky flower" or something like that. i like patchouli, but only some kinds, usually in candles. Sandalwood is nice, but again it really depends on the individual scent.
I like smelling the permeating scent of incense in metaphysical stores. I like buying a book, taking it home, and finding that a little of the store came with me. :)

I am not a fan of nag champa

i have some of this that i havnt burned in a long time. i have a 40g box of nag champa in the old blue box common stuff. it cost like 23 dollars at the shop that i ot it from. ive had it for a long time and i only burn it on occations when i want that smell. i get this really cheap stuff with like 5 different scents from a local party store. its only like 1.50 a box and theres 100 in the box. it actually smells pretty damn good but it burns super fast. nag champa burns alot slower and the super hit lasts like forever. i havnt gotten the super hit in a long time as there arnt many headshops or any other places that sell it local to me. the nearest headshop or any type of shop that sells good incense is like a good 45 minutes or more away.

Nesta knows incense!!!! I work at a hippie shop (they aren't headshops in Kansas after all) and by far Nag Champa is the A#1 best selling incense ever. Followed closely by the Super Hit. Lots of people by the "by the stick stuff" too, Auric Blends and Wild Berry are the ones we carry. I myself am a patchouli fan, the stinkier the better...with a stcik of Nag burning also to even it out.

23 bucks?? i hope they bought you dinner first.

40g is the most common size i've seen for nag champa. it costs a few bucks.
as for the amber morningstar, its only about 3 dollars a box for the size depicted (50 sticks, the small box. or you can get a big box of 200 for 6-7 bucks)

    they're both pretty economical.

if you really paid 23 bucks for it, i sure hope you got one of the nicer traditional incenses out there and simply mistaken whats in the picture for it.

    here, check it out:

even together you shouldnt have had to pay more than like 10 dollars or so, and thats if you got the huge box of the amber

hehe, careful with japanese incense, though. since you burn it upright (remember, theres no wooden core...if you tried to burn it in what most people think of as a "normal" incense holder, it would fall through the hole once it got short and potentially start a fire...if you get the morning star incense, i do know each box, regardless of size, comes with a cheap disposable ceramic burner) you have to be careful with it.....

i remember my first apartment....well, it was a townhouse really....

back then the underside of my left arm often had a lot of tiny little circular burns on it....i'd be tripping all night and burning the incense on the coffeetable in front of me. on many, many occasions i'd reach for something on the table and burn my arm without realizing it for a second or two...i'd end up with a few little dots on my arm the next day :p

now here's some expensive shit! "translucent path"...a fine aloeswood incense by shoyeido....500 dollars for 35 sticks of incense!

i can't imagine spending that much money on incense....

yeah, heres a site where you can get that exact amount of the same fragrance and brand for literally about 1/10 the price

    http://incenseguru.com/40_grams_nag_champa.html

seriously, thats fucking disgusting...i mean, its not the cheapest incense out there but it is by no means expensive, either.

at VERY most that should have cost you five dollars! sorry man!

LMAO this is like my worst stoner moment ever!!!!!! i found the real price tag on the end of the box. the price tag that i thought was for this was for a pipe that i bought at the time. i remember putting the tag on the box now. its been about a year or so since ive bought this box. the pipes been long since broke so i didnt even think about it. thats fuckin nuts that i completely forgot about that pipe. anyways your right it was only 5 bucks LMAO. you can barely read it in my pic but it says $5.00. i dunno why i got so good of pics from the other stupid price tag. hah, its cool, it would be an easy mistake to make...

whats even more cool is for once i was able to get resin out of the inside of my bubbler....usually i can get it from the bowl, but not the downstem usually. almost never from the inside, though....but i got more than a full bongpack of it...just took two nice, big hits and i'm already pretty buzzed

    mmm

    bedtime!
