You need to experience a life changing experience...i.e. watching your parents burn on the television, knowing there is nothing you can do.

Now, you are assuming people havent seen loved ones die in otherways, are you not? Death is death. Suffering is suffering. There are worse things, like actually physically seeing a family member going through excuciating pain because of a disease or otherwise, and you can still not do a thing about it, but you CAN see it.

In fact, many people cope with such things by using jokes as a denial mechanism, as well. It's ususally right there with shock and denial, but it is there.
