If you’ve seen the movie Knocked Up, you probably understand where this idea came from. Two of the characters in the movie consume some magic mushrooms and go to Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas. When it was clear that the circus was setting up their Varekai show in Amsterdam, we figured out that we had to do the same! Here’s how it all went down…

At 18:45 we consumed the Mexican Mushrooms. We then had 45 minutes to get from the middle of Amsterdam to Amsterdam Arena P2 before the show started, and the mushrooms kicked in. Despite the awful weather, we got to the circus just in time for the show. Before we went in the circus tent we both went to the bathroom. It was there I felt the mushrooms had started to work. I couldn’t really focus my eyes when I looked into the mirror, and the light in the toilet seemed very bright and weird.

The first thing we noticed when we entered the circus tent was how small the seats were. We were sitting very close to the people around us, something we thought might be a problem after a while. It turned out that this worked out perfect, and no one bothered us, or got bothered by us.

The circus started with some kind of a troll that did a sound-sketch thing which we really didn’t understand anything of. After that, some kind of an angel came flying down from the roof to nice music. It was all very beautiful, but hard to follow what the storyline was. After that it all just went completely nuts!! There were people doing incredible inhuman stunts, wearing crazy costumes, all accompanied by adventurous music. I especially remember one part where a guy was laying on his back, with his feet in the air. On his feet sat another guy, and the guy on the ground started flipping him around in summersaults. He flipped him around and around and around. There must have been 20-30 flips, some even with screws. I found myself yelling “WOOOOOOW!!!!” and “FUUUUUUUCCCKKK!!!” louder than anyone else. I didn’t care. There was an incredible act which was supposed to be situated under water. I have never in my life seen so beautiful colours, heard more fantastic music or seen more amazing stunts. It was all just incredible!

During the first half of the show there was also a comedy act with a very weird circus man and I girl who I really couldn’t tell was a guy or a girl. They went out in the audience and brought a random guy up on the stage. We were terrified!!! If they had picked us, we would have freaked out internationally!! There was also an act with three very small children that did some highly impressive tricks. We started thinking and talking about how they’ll probably grow up in that circus and one day become like the grown-up actors/acrobats there. I liked that thought. The first period ended after an amazing act with some warriors/Russians (we’re still discussing what they were), which really made a great impression on us. I just remember how red and warm it all seemed. Suddenly it was a break. We thought the show was over, and were almost on our way home, before we thought “ahhhh, it’s just a break. We have more to watch!! Great!!”.

After eating more mushrooms, we were ready for the 2nd half of the show. Man, was that amazing!! This show just got better and better. The people sitting behind us were gone, so were now even more free to laugh and yell out whatever we wanted. The 2nd half started out in complete darkness. Then the air got filled with what looked like fireflies. It was amazing to watch. Unfortunately we don’t remember everything from the second part, but it was incredible. Of the things we remember, a contortionist (extremely flexible woman) has to be mentioned. She was bending in all thinkable and unthinkable directions, and we had large difficulties figuring out what was up and down on her. Where was the head supposed to be? What are her hands, and what are her feet?? Another act had a guy trixing and throwing Mexican hats in all directions, just for them to come back to him so he could catch them again. It was totally wicked! In the background sat two kids with Mexican hats, nodding to the beat of the music. They were so funny that we couldn’t even watch the man playing with the hats. We just kept laughing of those kids. Incredible!

The whole show ended in an absolutely unbelievable act with Russian swings. The acrobats were doing flips and tricks in unthinkable ways, and no matter how sick the tricks were, the kept going more and more crazy! Totally unbelievable!!

Cirque Du Soleil Varekai is a fantastic show comprised by music, colours, humor, story and an unbeatable charm! Cirque Du Soleil Varekai on mushrooms is 50 times as good as that!! When the whole show ended with standing applaud from the audience, our night was complete. We agreed that it was the best idea we’ve ever had, and that it was the coolest thing we’ve ever experienced!!
