I couldn't find anythng on the web to back it up but it was confirmed on the news last night that in terms of sheer numbers and events, the RNC was the most heavily protested convention in history. The anticipated riots didn't develop, perhaps because the police presence was so overwhelming. About 1,800 people had been arrested or detained, many of them bystanders. Still, many areas around Madison Square Garden were pretty much shut down by the demonstrations. For the most part this is the way I wanted it, mostly peaceful demonstrations with some outbursts, but no riots. Still, riots do get more publicity, though it can be bad publicity. Dedicated Bush supporters won't be swayed by the protests; if the fact that he's a lying creep doesn't sway them nothing will. But it took away some of the edge Bush might have gained from all the speeches and rhetoric. Many voters who are on the fence will look at the protests and realize how divided the country has become in the past four years, and will consider that when they vote.
1st: He isn't lying 2nd: This is proof that people have no voice for themselves except what the media has told them to say.
1st: I suppose he wouldn't appear to be a liar if you believe everything he tells you. 2nd: I agree! Lots of us have been saying that about Bush's supporters!
You wanna know something, if you people diddn't want Bush, you should've got more people to get off their ass and vote for Gore.
Popular vote was in Gore's favor. And we've gone over the media-fed bullshit already. The media is mostly pro-government. The people that are hardcore believers in what Bush is doing are the people that believe everything the media and Bush says, not the people that dig deeper and find out the truth. Those are the people you see protesting. You're telling us that by going to a protest, we have no voice? We're just doing it because the media tells us to? When was the last time you turned on CNN and the announcer was saying "We disagree with Bush, go protest!"? Didn't think so, never. Ever occur to you that maybe people like doing something about things when they want change?
Popular vote wasin his favor by a small margin, but the sad thing is neither of them could even get 50% of voters to vote for them, but I'm just saying, people talk about Florida, Gore had other chances, like Missouri, Bush won there by 4,000 votes.
Did you even read my post. I said that protestors don't have a voice of thier own; not that they don't have a voice because they protest. I strongly doubt that any protestors are "digging deeper". In fact I'll bet that half of them get all of thier information second hand, if not third or fourth. I don't see what your CNN comment has to do with. Of course they wouldn't come right out and say it, but some of the things I've seen them do shows a clear left-wing bias. The media isn't "pro-government" they're pro-democrat. For some reason the alternative scenes have picked up anti-Bush sentiment also; like punk for instance. The entire community hates Bush and nobody can cite anything creidible. They hate him because they were told to.
If their voice comes from the media, then the protests are started by the media. Stop contadciting yourself. Thanks. And once again, your blind faith in Bush is coming out. Maybe these people are picking up on the anti-Bush thing because they're learning the truth. I know I didnt give a fuck until I started hearing what was being said, and then I researched it and found it to be true. I don't like what he's done or what he's doing. That's why I don't like Bush.
If you want documented proof of what went down in Florida in 2000, read "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast. It's tough reading, but he's clever as hell, funny, and makes hard reading as easy as possible.
I didn't say CNN was holding rallies, I said that people get thier information filtered through a crappy liberal media system; then they make assumptions, tell thier friends and everyone blindly goes to the streets to protest. I would bet you any amount of money that a large percentage of the people standing in that street have done no research or inquiry of any kind.
I would say you were making an assumption. If I were to make an assumption I would say people I know who are left of center get their news on-line. Personally I watch "Democracy Now" go to "truthout.com" and "google news" and for contrast, visit "The Drudge Report". Where do other people get their news? The only real intelligent conservative arguments I hear on-line are on "Military.com" and they are few and far between. (News, not punditry. Rush Limbaugh and Air America aren't "News") ,
I get most of my news from www.indymedia.org, www.commondreams.org, www.alternet.org, and the like. Anyone who counts solely on the mainstream (corporate) media is inviting deception into their minds. I feel for those who cannot afford a computer or an internet service because they can't afford to buy real news which is almost exclusively on the internet.
NYC indymedia had the most up to the minute coverage of the convention protests that I could find. I wouldn't say everything posted is completely accurate as there is no real filter, but their is usually enough video that you can figure out what is true for yourself.
Democracy Now? why would you go there for news? Thats like going to the SwiftVets site to get your news. I like AP, BBC, Fox, and CNN. I know they spin my news but I don't really care (how do you spin the weather?). I'll find out what really happened if it interests me.
That's the same mentality of everyone voting for Bush. They know their shits not the truth, and they dont give a damn. They know their God's in office, and he's not going anywhere. Whatever happened to assassins? I'm really starting to miss them.
Why would you go to Fox to get your news? Democracy Now "spins" the news, much less than they do. (if at all) See the movie "Outfoxed" all I gotta say
Salmon's what some might call a lost, disparate soul...sleepwalking through day to day life, content with the illusions he admits he's aware of, living the ignorant...blissful life. The 2nd worse kind of American...behind only the corporate elite.
Ooop you figured us out! We all sit around trying to find new ways to lie to ourselves. Please, Mr. Knowitall, show me the way to enlightenment. I wish to suffer from your liberal guilt and large government ruining my life. I'm so tired of forcing myself to believe what I know is not true, we don't know why we do it. I think it has something to do with the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy; of which I cannot fully understand..... they are controlling my mind. idiot
