I just want to introduce myself to everyone on the forum. My name is Josh and i've been a reader for a long time, trying to glean as much of the information available here as I can. I'm in the process of growing my hair out for dreadlocks and after reading most of the threads here I've come up with a question or two that you guys may be able to help me out with. I currently have colored hair ( very dark blue tips with light/jewel tone blue underneath) and while I do not plan to bleach my hair any further (dont want the babies getting eaten from the inside out) I do plan to continue coloring the pre-existing hair. I use manic panic hair color in either shocking blue or aftermidnight blue. will this product cause the dreads to loosen too much? If not, will they still take the semipermanent color? will I lose color more quickly by switching to a residue-free soap such as DR Bronners? If anyone has any answers or opinions, anything would be greatly appreciated!

cant answer exactly, but id be a lil hesitent to try dying till they were at least starting to tighten up a bit
i dont think bronners would take it out any faster, especialy if u use it diluted..
i dunno what else to tell ya tho, never died mine

I wouldn't dye too soon, give them some time to tighten up. I've heard manic panic doesn't stay in hair all that well actually, SFX is supposed to be a much better veggie dye. I don't think a residue free soap would make much of a difference, but I'm not entirely sure. Oh, and remember if you're dying dreads, don't squish the dye inside, just coat the outsides.. hope that helps!

i dye mine, but mine are a year old this month....
hell my dreadies are a year old already??? how did that happen?! woop woop!
i use shocking pink and dr bronners doesnt take too much colour out, and it really seems to help to counter the harsh bleach i have to use to get my hair to take any colour.
the deep cleaning concoction does strip my pink dye out though. i'm in the uk and use directions semi permanent (6-8 washes type).
and yeah, you only need do the outside of the dreads, with either the bleach or the dye :D
