Anyone know what grooveboxes or drum machines are good these days? Or what types of equipment is being used for electronic music?

Well, people don't use as much gear as they used to, most use a mix of programs(like sonar, ableton live, protools, Fl) and various equiptment. Alot of people use samplers like the MPC 1000/2000XL/4000 or program samplers. Akai MPC's are great, you can really do alot with them, but you can do alot more with your computer and a good PA system.

what backtothelab said... I'd probably say that about 90% of recognized electronic music producers are using their computer. I use FL Studio 4, Cubase SX, and Reason (though I'm phasing it out) with an edirol midi keyboard. The Akai samplers are very nice, though; I'd love to get my hands on one, but I'd rather have the Yamaha 01X, a mixer that works like any other mixer for live instruments, but also fully controls a program like Cubase; very nice!

It's all about money. If you have thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars to blow on hardware, go for it; a lot of people find it much easier to use; but your computer can do it all as well, for way cheaper, or for free, if you want to uh... do a little searching.... ;)
