I recently watched Bergman's 'Trilogy of Faith': Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light and The Silence - three discrete (standalone) films that share certain themes and aesthetics. Winter Light is my favourite of the three... I find it hard to put into words exactly what I like so much about these films. They are very philosophical and mostly dialogue-driven, with small ensemble casts (they have been described as 'chamber movies'), yet they seem to just draw you right into them... I was wondering what other films by the same director I should look at next. Recommendations, please!
One of the best films ever made by a human being: Persona. It's Bergman's foray into experimental cinema, but unlike a lot of crap that passes for experimentation he actually uses the weirdness to make a point, and to add sophistication and intelligence to the film. I won't ruin the story for you, but the main themes are identity and psychic warfare. But you really can't go wrong with Bergman-- pretty much anything he's done is worth watching.
