Hey guys, I'm planning on going to BC this november or december. I'm trying to get a working holiday visa, but it's been a bit of a hassle to even find info on it. (My country only recently signed a working holiday exchange deal with Canada) But I can get a 6 month tourist visa. So I'm curious, what are the chances for getting cash in hand work (I have experience bartending, for example.) and how "risky" is it?
You probably won't find it bartending. It used to be picking fruit in the Okanagon, but now they import Mexicans to whom the labour code does not apply. If you have any experience, your best bet is a Vancouver construction site.
sitkas got it right. you can still pick fruit in the okanagan though. i have a friend who did it last fall. construction in van is probably your best bet though and it pays good. youre not likely to get under the table work bartending or anything similar.
Going North to Fort St. John is another option where you can easily get under the table work; its more a question of whether you're willing to live there though.
Well, that's discouraging. Fortunately I've found some more info on getting a visa now, so I just need to apply and things will be gravy. Thanks guys.
even when they import mexican laborors in canada ,canadian labor codes do apply ....vacation pay, mnimum wage etc.
No it doesnt. 1) Labour codes vary by province; there is no Canadian standard to meet. 2) In BC, agricultural labour is excluded from the labour code.
go to north van take your second exit and head east, turn right at teh grocery store go pass the gates into the reservation, make your first left into the construction lot...that lot is a staging groundf for a whole lotta bussiness, roofing paving construction landscaping. I worked for monarch poaving in teh far corner, the owner is a good guy, he pays well, he also will direct you to anyone in the area who is hiring, the roofing company does a lot, and pays well. hard work but it pays.
vancouver island has loads of cash work. drywall, greenhouse work, etc. just get a visa though - what country are you from?
getting a visa seems difficult. my country has a working holiday arrangement (since march 07) with Canada, but they require a police report for each country I've lived in for more than six months; from my own country is no problem, but it's a bit of an arduous process to get one from Australia. and even with all the documents in place it seems quite difficult to get an application approved, but that might just be a detterent. there's always the option of getting sponsored by a business to get a work visa for a limited time, and I do know some canadians who might be able to hook it up. anyways, because of the apparent difficulty of getting a visa I might just stay in Thailand/asia for the whole high season, then work on a mediterranean island for the next season, and go Canada the ski season next year. we'll see. thanks for your suggestions
bunac.org --- try that website. I've got a friend here from the UK and he's on a one-year visa and all you needed was to be 18-30, no criminal record, and you have to get a return ticket and travel insurance.
wow! thanks a ton, that lead me to a site that looks awesome at a glance. unfortunately no more visa opportunities for Canada, but lots of other countries to choose from. this looks really good. thank you
