If you really think about it the less we use, the less trees are cut down...

But I must admit, while I try to be enviromentally concious, I LOVE paper towels! So conveinent, so free of germs, so disposable...

paper towels are convenient, just like everything technology has made, but its usually harsh for earth. i think there should be reusable paper towels or biodegradable. plus it would be convenient if it was good for the planet

You're in luck! Check out <http://www.seventhgeneration.com/page.asp?id=1160> for eco-friendly papertowels and other supplies. Also, check out <http://www.coopamerica.org/> for "practical steps for using your consumer and investor power for social change."

Those cotton towels you get at Wal-Mart or the thrift store for less than a buck each are just as good and reusable!! So is good old soap and water.

All very true - it is good not to cut down too many trees. Remember though, that some trees must be cut down to maintain the optimum health of a forest - unless you think we should go "totally natural" and allow forest fires to do the "thinning" for us.

I use old stained clothes or towels as napkins/paper towels. We keep a basket in one cabinet of clean rags/wipes/napkins and a basket under the sink to collect used ones. I throw them in the laundry a few times a week and it works wonderfully.

there is nothing cool, or good, or positive about shopping at walmart despite what you can get there for a dollar.

Unless you have to because of your financial situation. I worked at a Wal-Mart for three years. I know what goes on there. If I could afford to buy all of my food at local whole food stores I would, but the sad fact is that most people (even full-timers) can't afford it. You pick and choose what you can and can't do.

I buy most of my food and cleaning/health supplies at natural and organic shops. Clothing and hard supplies (like buckets and a toothbrush) have to come from Wal-Mart(or K-Mart) or the thrift store.

    Love.

"Trees they plant just to cut down then replant?"

Yes, I don't know about the paper towel application, but their are tree farms. You sound shocked, but if you think about it, its no different than planting wheat just to cut it down and replant.

    Why?

First, our (humanities) use of wood exceeds the repalcement rate.

Second, the energy and chemicals used to turn trees into paper are significant.

Third, after we have disposed of paper towels, where do they go? Most paper towels are not compostable because of the bleaching agents used in their manufacture, thus they add to the waste stream leading to landfills.

Finaly, each of us should be aware of what we use, where it comes from, and where it goes after we are done with it. Using paper towels is part of the Western disposable culture.

As the slogan says; Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, and Rebuy (I would add Repair)

I think I'd rather be poor than shop or work at Wal-Mart.
