When I first stumbled onto this site I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I then built up an image of what I thought the perfect hippy was and tried to reflect it, all under the guise of expressing myself. Id hear you guys say something about the environment or spirituality and Id just agree. Ive since done what I want. and you know what, I like meat, leather/fur, cars, violence, guns, hunting for sport, etc... Id be lying if I said otherwise. psychedelic music is good, but most of it sounds like crap, lava lamps are a fire hazard, most incense (though I love the stuff) gives me a headache, there is nothing creative or expressive about drawing down random shit, I like to keep my hair short and knot free, my clothing of choice is the simple hoody and jeans, Im a republican, I like mcdonalds and starbucks, Im an athiest, Peace/love will never be global, and most of the young people around you guys are just conforming to the group.

So, be who you are. I don't understand liking violence or being a republican among other things, but as long as you don't try to make me conform to your beliefs, fine.

    ^ ditto, sister.

do what you like, just don't make me agree with it. i back up everything i do and am proud to hug trees and recycle and not brush my hair, but it'd be damn selfish of me to preach MY beliefs onto you.

Conformity is for weak minded asshats. Be yourself, dickshine, and you'll be a lot happier.

Good for you honestly, i think i can relate to how you feel myself although my expectations weren't created from this site... not by a long shot (perhaps not, i cant say for sure but that is another discussion.).

Just so long as you understand that your dissapointment was only created by your own expectations.

There are a lot of self righteous preachers and quasi-psychologists on this site, expect further responses like this.

*and by this i don't mean your response, i mean the one you have quoted.

We all conform one way or another, or am I wrong about that? I mean... you aren't born knowing the things that you know now. You can't escape that... just take what is already available to you and use it to express yourself, all the while creating new ideas.

No you are completely correct, it is human nature to conform at least to some degree. Conformity is the exact reason why otherwise "good" people can commit sadistic acts which is an extreme example but a good one.

Well, no one is perfect. Martin Luther King jr was a womanizer, but did many good things. Ghandi was supposedly a racist, but still manged to do a lot of good things. It really isn't a case against goodness. There are many sides to the same person, definitely (yin and yang).

Both people tried their best to make our overall lives happier, but still remained very human.

    Eh, preachy peachy...

Whether or not some conformity is actually a good thing, now that's another question altogether. If everyone conformed to pacifism, then their would be no wars. I'd like to see a belief in goodness as a good thing. Be it for survival, to have a more happier, contentment life, or whatnot. Who doesn't want contentment?

Hey listen man, people have been calling me a hippy for about two years. I typed in hippy.com and ended up here. I'm not gonna lie, I have problems finding myself at times. I feel like I'm doing things just to fit in or be liked, and other times I feel like I do things just to stand out. I really like the music and whole culture, I suppose, associated with hippies. But I figure I'd do what I like and try things I don't anyway...I don't know what I'm trying to say. But when you are yourself, you just don't think about style or anything.

conform means to fit in, the way we/re using it. You conform everyday, in little ways. You speak english, I dont know where you are from, but your society has influenced you in that way.

So if you dont conform, you chooose to go against certain standards or common thought. Like wearing clothes, etc. In this case, youd get arrested for not wearing clothes, but you can still chooose what clothes you wear. Wearing a tie dye shirt, bell bottoms, a head band and being barefoot are ways to seemingly break out of the standard whatever clothes, but you conform to the hipie ideal.

All people conform. Some more than others, for many reasons- they like to feel accepted by other people, or they fear alienation. With the issue of conformity/nonconformity comes the issue of being yourself- are you trying to fit in too much or are you trying to stand out too much? What are you when you dont try to do either?

    Look it up, dumbass!

I don't get how you could try to conform to the people here though..I have only been posting a little while and i have seen a pretty diverse bunch of people.

    Long hair,short hair,straight hair, dreads-
    veg,vegan,omni,
    straight,gay,and in between,
    teens,adults,parents grandparents,
    every religion,
    right wing,left wing,
soo many different people here,I am having trouble seeing how you could feel you had to-or could conform to one style of person here.Is it a joke?

    and with that:

You mean that there are actually right wingers and catholics around here??? IN A FREE SPEACH FORUM??? You gotta be shittin' me. Both sets of those people have tried most of thier lives to bury the truth.

    Southpark is good...

(I come from a VERY strict catholic family - not trying to offend anyone, so don't start. I KNOW what the catholic church is like and you won't get anywhere flaming me over speaking the truth about it)
