Sorry for the mini novel ! I backcombed my last set and they were great.... except I ended up with only eight sections across the top, which left my head looking flat. I waited til they'd matured a bit, to see if time would improve things, but still felt I needed more sections in the top, so I unpicked em. My hair is shoulderblade length, slightly wavy/curly, and fairly thick but sparse across the top. (this seems to be my problem). I am starting again this week and want to create more sections this time; and I want to get this right, so I can have them for life. By the way, I have noone to help me, and refuse to go to a salon Id feel much better about myself knowing that ive done it all. Ive been practising placing the sections in different ways and I still cant fit enough in. I've also tried honeycomb sections. If I can get about a dozen over the top area I'll be happy with that. If you can advise, I'll be chuffed to bits!!! Am I playing too safe and not making them small enough? (concerned about having too little hair at each base). Last time I had 38 dreads in total. I think Id like to squeeze in quite a few more, maybe backcomb around 45 to 50. Many thanks...
That is a concern of mine as well.... Only my main worry is that I'll have "bald spot" areas with scalp showing. Another issue I've had is loosing over half of the hair's length after backcombing. Perhaps it is too much? Anyway, enough of my BS, hopefully your question can be answered!
i have it a bit. what will eventually happen (from what i understand) is the loose hairs on the 'flat bit' will join to make new dreads. so long term, no flat bit!
ok... great news!!! Ive done it. Im sitting here right now with it all sectioned up and ready to start backcombing. Here's what I did: I started from the TOP, and worked back. This gave me a lot more freedom over placement. I gathered all the hair on the top and divided the centre parting. Then I divided each side into three vertical rows (going forward toward face). I will divide these into squares a bit later. Next I divided the back into four horizontal rows. YAY!! I finally managed to give the illusion of more hair. :bounce: Now there's the backcombing to do. *phew* this is gonna take a while. Im knackered already, lol.
