Before i get my piercing, i have a few questions.
    1. Before i get my piercing, should i ask the piercer to put a small earring or a retainer?
    2. Are the acrylic stud retainers for an ear cause infection?
    3. After getting my piercing, is my ear going to swell the next day?

    Thanks

    1. I would ask for a surgical stainless steel captive bead ring. they're easy to clean, inexspensive, and com ein many sizes. I wouldn't go to a piercing pagoda where they put those starter studs in your ear using a gun.

    2. Acrylic is porous and can harbour bacteria that cause infection. This bascially means you can never get it 100% clean. Its better to stick with something non-porous such as metal or glass.

    3. There will be swelling, but probably not much.

I would go to a professional piercing shop over a mall store that uses a gun because its much cleaner and more liekly to heal well.

    Good luck

I am going to a tattoo shop to pierce my ear. You said about surgical stainless steel captive bead ring, do the piercers usually have this kind of earring?

Yeah, it's pretty much the standard...just make sure you're not going somewhere sketchy and you're good.

No, it wont swell. It will at first, but by the next day it'll be minimal at the most. Nothing to be concerned about.

It should take about 6 weeks, but you'll need to keep an earring in for a year in case it closes up. Saying that it's only been about 3 minths since I got my third lobe piercing and I can leave the earring out now.

It really depends on how quickly you heal. Most places will tell you to wait at least a month before taking it out and changing earrings. I have had my ears pierced for about 24 years, since I was 11, and have had very little trouble with them ever. I don't remember any swelling, but it was a very long time ago. I got a second piercing in my left ear when I was 18 but, my mom did it with a sterilized safety pin, and I won't leave an earring out of it because of my fear that it will close. I know it is an totally unrealistic fear, and the likelihood of the second one ever closing after 17 years are very, very slim, but it is just my preference not to have to worry about it.

The people who have said to use a professional piercer are totally right. The pagodas and stuff at malls are not usually as well trained, in my personal experience. And the piercer will be able to answer any questions you have for them at the time of your piercing. Just remember to follow the instructions that they give you, and keep the ear clean to help avoid possible infections.

But when i leave the earring for about 1 month, and i don't know if the healing period is over, and i remove the earring, what will happen?

As long as you don't take the earring out and leave it out for an extended period of time, nothing should happen. If the earring is left out for an extended period of time, over 24 hours, it could start to close up. I am not sure what the recommended time for keeping your first earring is anymore, though. You will be able to get all the information that you need, or want, from your piercer as well. They will make sure that you are properly informed about what to expect, how long to allow for healing, how to care for it, and all the information you could ever want. If it would make you feel better to have the information up front, you can go to the shop you are planning to have do your piercing and ask for an information sheet. Every single one I have been to has a pre-printed sheet for that kind of thing. :)

I got my piercing almost a week ago. He told me to clean it 3 times a day, and change/remove earring 6 weeks later.
